This is very interesting. I have been developing a bunion over the past six months or so. I haven't worn high heels in 10 years so I don't think it's my footwear anyway.

Anyway I had a similar experience as the subject of the article, only for a different malady. I tried CAM to cure what I had going on (that I'd rather not go into) and struggled for years. Finally I went to a doctor, got a prescription and was better in 3 days. That experienced shaped my view of CAM forever. That is to say I don't have a very high opinion of it.

Anyway, I plan to get surgery on my toe as soon as I graduate and get a job with insurance. My toe is killing me.

My friend had both feet done, one at a time of course. A lot of nurses get bunions. My friend says, "Ya really got to be ready to be off your foot and on crutches for close to 2 months, it is a lot harder than you think". The docs are not kidding when they say "No weight bearing". My friend and a couple of others told me that was the most difficult thing to deal with. Everyone that had it done was able to continue working at the bedside after recovering from the surgery. Everyone of them thought their days as a bedside nurse were over. Like you say, lot of pain.

That is certainly encouraging. I was getting scared thinking I'd never get to do bedside nursing (I graduate in May). I was thinking my career was over before it even got started.

I might take some time off this summer and have it done before I get a hospital job.

For those of you who've had their bunions removed, do you recommend that I get it taken care of while I'm studying for the NCLEX over the summer?

I was starting to develop bunions. Then I found yoga toes. (Google it, you'll find them.) They're a bit pricey, but they're WONDERFUL. My mom, sisters, best friend (and her mom and sister) and even brother-in-law all use them now. They're becoming a huge hit in the ballroom dance world where us girls have to dance in heels. And while they are a bit pricey (~$30 I think? The price has come down since I bought them), they're still cheaper than bunion surgery and don't require you staying off your feet. I'd definitely try them before I went for bunion surgery.
