Bulgarian Nurses Stand Together in Court

One team of lawyers will defend death-sentenced Bulgarian nurses at Libya's Supreme Court, according to Justice Minister Anton Stankov.

Sofia had initially planned to attract a separate lawyer for each of the Bulgarian nurses as the charges against them are based on self-confessions made by two of them, claimed to be extracted with torture.

On May 6 the Benghazi Criminal Court delivered death verdicts on five Bulgarian nurses on charges of deliberately infecting with HIV over 400 Libyan children. The same sentence was passed on a Palestinian doctor.

The defendants and the defense have reached an agreement on the defense thesis.

According to Justice Minister Stankov the appeal develops the thesis the defense presented before the delivery of the sentences, the experts' report and the tortures used in extracting self-confessions.

It was not immediately known whether Libyan Prosecutors' Office has lodged an appeal against the verdict of Doctor Zdravko Georgiev, one of the six defendants in the HIV case. He was sentenced to four years in prison and released as he had already served them during the investigation and the hearings of the court.

My heart breaks reading this story...all healthcare workers should show their outrage in some unified fashion here.
