Yeah. Unfortunately it goes further than the skin color thing. I've seen some of the attitudes towards fat nurses who don't look like the bimbos that are usually seen in the nurse porn fantasies. And the hospitals don't care because they are more concerned about what the client wants than anything else.

So true. Perhaps it is more so in California that attractive young female nurses are asked for by some patients. Yup, mich worse open disapproval of fat then racism.
Since most of us are older, about 2/3 either male or non white patients are usually quickly reassured they will have a competent nurse working to assure safe effectuve therapeutic nursing care according to the needs of the individual patient.
That is why we continue the fight for safe staffine. In our ICU no nurse could (legally) be assigned more than two patients at any tome.
Quality care with time for teaching and reassuring the patient and family goes a long way toward having patients feel comfortable with a nurse who does not match expectations.

It is hard to trust an overly busy nurse who cannot stay to listen or spend the time because their other patients need them more.

Angry Blonde-blue-eyed?

Why does it have to be a blonde-haired, blue-eyed nurse that is "dumb as dirt"- talk about stereotyping...............same reason for racism because of stereotypes like this that generalize everyone and put them into one category.........there are a lot of dumb people with all sorts of color of hair and eyes, including brown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While I don't agree with racism, I don't think the hospital, where patients are sick and afraid, is the place to advance social agendas, teach about racism or try to overcome what could be generations of cultural norms. Yes, regular ole' white America has a "culture" too. Much like teaching a new mom how to breast feed immediately after a C-section, while she is in recovery, bleeding and sedated is not the right time, nor do I think that rectifying racial problems in society should take place in the hospital with a sick and fearful patient.

Well said!! I cant agree with you more. White people have a heritage as well and just like we have a choice of which doc we see on a regular basis, we should also have the choice of chosing who will take care of us in a hospital setting or an emergency situation. This is America, is it not? What happened to freedom of choice?

QOUTE "I know the black/Asian/Indian nurse is a thousand times more valuable and they deserve all the protection available to them."

How do you figure? This sounds like the most racist comment Ive heard on this forum.

I think this comment was taken out of context. I think s/he was saying that the black/Asian/Indian nurse is more valuable than the racist patient. I agree with that, for sure. Choosing a doctor is different because you can "shop" for a doctor. They are running a business and you choose to do business with them using whatever criteria you prefer. Nurses are provided by whatever facility you are being treated at, so you should take whatever they give you. The only exception to that should be (in my opinion, which has been thwarted a few times on here) if you do not feel that the nurse is competent, for some reason.
