Alabama Nurses Quit over Morning-After Pill

Some nurses in Alabama's public health clinics have quit their jobs rather than administer the emergency contraception known as the morning-after pill. The nurses say they consider the drug to be the equivalent of abortion, and that goes against their beliefs.

It's their choice, i mean, did they actually think that it would make people think twice about dispensing it?

Re: morning-after pill

I agree with the nurses who refused to give the pill. It also goes against my Christian beliefs. What concerns me the most right now, though, is the replies from our more liberal peers. We are all entitled to our beliefs and opinions; that's just a small part of why I love this country so much. We all need to remember this when we express our opinions and try not to be so close-minded and critical of those who disagree. The rudeness is not neccessary. We're all in the "business" of nursing together, and if we can't disagree without getting snide we're defeating our own pupose. There are too many other way more important problems to deal with these days.

I agree...let 'em quit. I don't see anything rude about that at all. If they have issues about working there because of the type of practices that are done (which mind you if they had such issues they should have checked into company policy before taking a job there) then they are free to leave.

I won't get into why I think the pill is alright...I'd be here all day and that's not what this thread is about. Never the less...it's legal and people have the right to request it. If you don't want to give it don't give it. It's your choice...it's also your choice to quit (or possibly lose) your job over it. So be it.

Alabama nurses quit

Please !!! I am very tired of people forcing their own views on the public. If you work in a public health environment, then you should encourage PUBLIC HEALTH!! Let em quit and find jobs where they can express their private convictions without question.

I am a big fan of not having people working in situations that offend their personal morality. They are not doing themselves or their patients any favors, as very few of us are capable of providing care in an untenable situation like that without having our attitude creep out at least a little bit.

I am glad these nurses are going elsewhere where they can be more personally fulfilled and more professionally capable.

I also don't consider it rude to agree with quitting if you are incapable of performing the duties of your job, whether it be because of moral objections or anything else. I respect their opinions and hope they find a job that fits with their beliefs, and I hope the facility finds nurses who can perform the job.

I don't find anyone here being rude or snide just because they are expressing their opinion. Just think, many people in the world don't enjoy free speech....don't be hypersensitive about it.
