NORTH ANDOVER -- Thirty-six years ago when Margaret Fitzgerald entered nursing school straight out of Wakefield High School, the profession she aspired to join was at a crossroads.

Massachusetts, like the rest of the country, was experiencing a shortage of physicians, and the state had begun licensing nurses with advanced degrees and training to diagnose diseases, prescribe medication, and recommend treatments as nurse practitioners.
