Advanced practice nurses need 'right to write' prescriptions

EDITORIAL

Like most health-care professions, the field of nursing has undergone a revolution in recent years. An increasing number of registered nurses go beyond the required two years of training and intensive examinations to receive their license, and earn bachelor's and master's degrees. Many also undergo further advanced training and certification in specialized fields.


Likewise, the duties of registered nurses have expanded greatly. A highly trained professional such as a nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist or nurse practitioner often is qualified to perform tasks once limited to physicians.
