"almost perfect" = RED FLAG!! I've worked w/a few that we all wished would get on medications! I have noticed that nurses DO tend to drink alot, but I don't know if this is more as compared to the general population...& oddly I don't care.........

It has been about 2 weeks now since I sent my message to the news director and I found out that it had either been blocked or delayed on his computor. Need to find another route.

Re: '1 In 3' Nurses Battle Drug Addiction

Hi everyone!

Just an update. I re-entered the nursing field a few weeks ago and am working on the chemical dependency unit of my local hospital. Love my job. The patients seem to trust me more because they know that "I've been there". You know, people say that our past makes us who we are today, and I firmly believe that. Yesterday I was a real stuck-up, ignorant *****. Today I am a kind, open-minded person. It took hitting the bottom to knock me off of my thrown, and I'm a much better person because of it.

Thanks to all who supported me!
Lisa S.

P.S. Education is the answer to ignorance.

best of luck to you lisa. i'm sure it has been a struggle congratulations on getting your feet back underneath you.

i'm scared to death of prescription painkillers. i have an uncle who absolutely flushed his life down the toilet, and never recovered. and he didn't get hooked till he was 50 years old. he's 58 now, and has lost everything plus ruined his health. we're expecting him to die anytime now. yep, it can be that bad.

Re: '1 In 3' Nurses Battle Drug Addiction

Sorry I have worked with several nurses that have been caught stealing drugs and I have no sympathy for them. Yes I hope they get rehab and get their lives together but I hope they never are allowed back in nursing
and I can never trust them to work with them again. It is not fair to me to have to keep my eye on them while we are working and it certainly isn't worth the hell they put the patient through and the other staff members while we watched the patients in pain and could do nothing because we
thought they had received their pain med. Shame on all of you.

It's a shame where one nurse thinks he/she does no wrong and can pass judgement on another. That is the kind of nurse I wouldn't want to work with.

I never said I did no wrong and I never said I was perfect and I hope we never have to work together either. Tell me. how can you ever trust these people not to steal drugs again?

Re: '1 In 3' Nurses Battle Drug Addiction

You ask how can you ever trust these people not to steal drugs again? Well I say at least the nurse is honest and admit she has a problem, what about the nurses that are stealing drugs but lying about it? Lets face it, if you are getting away with it, you aren't going to admit to it are you? And what about the nurses who's passing judgment on others while stealing the drugs themselves? Where I worked there were nurses who were caught stealing drugs and some who had gotten away with it, at least the ones who were caught had gone through rehab and gotten the help they needed. And as you read in "momentum" the ones who aren't complient with the agreements are the one's who lose their license, not the nurses who go through rehab and get the help they need. But I do not believe that the names should be public knowledge, just because of your reaction, I think it should remain private until the end when it is decided that the nurse was given fair chance to get help and refuse to comply with treatment.
What I do want to say is I know addiction, I used to smoke, and I remember the trouble that I went through to quit and like most addicts I do not want to have to go through that trouble again, that is why I do not smoke anymore. And that is how I can trust a nurse not to steal drugs again. Besides, its not up to me to judge another nurse, as long as patient care is top priority, and with addicts patient care isn't top priority and that is how they get caught.
It is late and I am tired, so I may edit this later.
