I did a travel assignment there last summer and loved it.
What unit were you hired for? You normally do not work in both critical care and operating theatre here if you are hired for a specific unit.

If you check out the UK forum, you will see that there is a thread specifically about working in the US, as well as a thread on the same topic on the Arizona Forum.
Check them out.
My favorite unit there is unit 500...............

Hello!
I was just wondering if you are coming to the US as a traveler nurse. If you are, just be very cautious when you sign the dotted line. I worked with several nurses from The UK, Australia, and South Africa, and there was one consistant problem---travel companies really took advantage of them. One friend left her home, family, etc. to move to the US. She was paid a SIGNIFICANTLY lower wage than the other travelers and floor nurses, was told after 1 month that she would have to pay for her own housing, had her rental furniture taken away, and to top it off, she was stuck with their contract for 2 years. A lot of the foreign nurses had similar stories. Yes, you get a work visa, but you don't have to be a slave--I'm fairly certain we got rid of that over a hundred years ago . Hope this helps ya! Good luck to you and enjoy the heat!

That was when temporary work permits were available for nurses, they no longer are. The nurse can only come on a green card which gives them permanent residency and the same rate of pay as the American RN.

From what I remember, this was still with a green card--the travel companies would pay for the work visa, but as part of the contract, you would agree to work at the lower pay rate (not realizing what the American nurses really make). The companies' rationale was that they spent "so much" for the visa, that you owed them for that This was as of 2003-2004. I still keep in touch with several of the foreign nurses, and that I know of, this is what is still going on. Even if the travel companies are possibly pulling a fast one, most of the foreign travelers couldn't afford to do anything about it. There are honest travel companies, but it takes work to find what you're looking for.

They actually can't do that anymore, they have to submit the rate of pay, etc, to immigration. There are agencies out there that still try to get away with it, but if the nurse signs with them, it is her responsibility to know what she is signing. Exact rates are listed in every contract, as well as what will be deducted. There are nurses that are in a rush to get to the US and do not do their homework and get taken advantage of, but that is now how it is supposed to be.
