Are prospective male nursing students not welcome to the field?

Just basing this on what I have seen here. My wife, who is a nurse with many years of experience, says that male nurses are still not welcomed to the field. They are treated like they're "not good enough". This should reall change, in my opinion.

Well maybe that is her opinion, but mine is totally different! It doesn't matter if you are male or female. If you can take care of your patients and help out, who cares if you are a guy? I personally LOVE working with male nurses. There are 2 on in the ICU where I work midnights. Usually there are only 2 nurses on at night, and it is WONDERFUL when they are there to help lift heavy patients or deal with an extremely strong, combative OD patient. I work in a small community, but I will tell you that I would rather work a male nurse anyday who does his job than a female nurse who is lazy and sits on her butt!

She doesn't speak for everyone in the nursing field.

While in nursing school A classmate tried to get me expelled for saying to my best friend in school "Nicky, get your hand off my knee! " btw only male in a school of 100. I'm afraid that I am turning into a masogonist. I was not before I became a nurse.

I donīt agree with your wife. I have always felt very welcome, and I am treated with respect. Most women like to have men around.

Based on my experience, I find no real, pervasive bias against male nurses. Generally speaking, nurses are realists. There is a shortage of nurses. Most of us don't care what gender another nurse is as much as we care that there is one more person to help.

I could care less whether the person I'm working with is male or female, I'm looking for competance, teamwork & professionalism.

Hi and welcome to allnurses!!

In our class of 50 students, we have 5 male students, and they are wonderful!! I've worked with some really great male nurses during clinicals, too. I don't see why they wouldn't be welcome.

Welcome to allnurses
As I posted in the male forum, I think it depends a lot on where you work. I've never witnessed any anti-male bias in nursing but, aware that my gender might mean I didn't see it, I've asked the men I work with it they've experienced any prejudice. One man said he had an instructor who seemed to have a problem (though he thought that she had issues with pretty much everyone else, too), the rest of them say not.
