old nurse/new job

Greetings to all,

I graduated nursing school in 1979, however, I have worked only enough to keep my license. You know the speel, raising kids AND husband, the usual stuff. Husband is now retired, kids gone, etc. I have not worked at all for the past six years, so am a little nervous about getting back into the job market. I would really like to spend the next 10/15 years nursing; geriatrics are my preference. I have sent out resumes to several local Home Health Agencies & hope to hear from at least one of them soon. I don't have a clue about salary these days & I'm sure other things have changed as well, especially meds, ugh!!

I stumbled onto this site while refreshing my memory on the proper way to insert a catheter. I'm so glad to be here!

Would love to hear from you all, especially someone in the same situation as I.

Thanks,

Angel7

Let this decision tree help you get started:
If you are a Pre-Nursing Student--->we have a Pre-Nursing Student forum.
If you are a Current Nursing Student--->we have two forums for you.
1) General Nursing Student Discussion forum for support by your peers
2)Nursing Student Assistance forum to help with school projects
If you are a Current LPN--->we have the LPN/LVN Corner forum and others of interest.
If you are a LPN to RN Student---> we have a LPN to RN forum.
If you are a Current RN--->we have many forums for you.
If you are in Nursing Grad School--->we have a Graduate Student Nurse forum
If you are an Advanced Practice Nurse--->we have your specialty forum.
If you are a nurse in career transition--->we have a Nursing Career Advice forum.
And lastly, our list of nursing specialties is exhaustive...each has its own forum.

Our list of different forums is located here:---> Allnurses List of Forums

Have a topic to discuss or question to ask? Go to the list of forums, pick the forum that best matches, and post in there (PG 13 language ALWAYS). You will get feedback. So, check back often.

To make a post in a forum, just go to that forum and post like you did here if someone has already created it...your post is a reply response.

To create your own new thread (the first post to start off feedback), you do this:
In any forum, go to the top yellow bar and towards the right, you will see something that reads--> Forum Tools. It is a pull down menu. Click it. In that menu, you will see--> Post a New Thread. Click that.

And there you go.....just follows what it tells you.

If your nursing related question does not fit any particular forum and is a general nursing related topic, post it in our General Nursing Discussion forum.

Re: old nurse/new job

Hi Angel7,
Welcome to Allnurses. Hope you enjoy this site as much as I do. I've been a nurse for ~30 yrs. and will start a new job in Home Health tomorrow. Good luck in your job search and, don't worry, it will all come back to you once you get into it again. Probably new meds and lots more paperwork, for sure. Hope to see more of you here. Let us know how it goes.

Re: old nurse/new job

Welcome to the site. I hope you'll find the answers you are looking for. For Salary, I find the state forums are the best to get an idea of the accurate salary in your area.
Be sure to follow up your resume with a telephone call, and if possible these HHA are going to want to see some sort of refresher class. Not only has the salary changed, but all the wacky equipment is completely different from the 70's for sure...
Good Luck!
