Smile New Student

Hello Everyone,

I am a new student trying to figure out the best, quickest way to become an RN. I am 52 years old and just got back from New York taking my youngest to college. I have been a foster parent for almost 9 years for newborns. I am moving to Arizona to be by one of my other daughters and want to go to school there. I started taking some classes last year. I took Pharmacology, Medical Terminology, CPR, Developmental Psychology and a Word Class. This June I passed my National Phlebotomy Exam and have my certificate for that.
My problem is I don't know where to begin. I want to take classes online to begin with. I looked into Phoenix University online and they say you can get a nursing degree in three years with all the prerequisites too. It is really expensive,$30,000. Because I don't want to waste any time I considered this but do any of you have any other suggestions? Any and all will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Debbie

Welcome!!

If you are interested in online classes be sure to visit the distance learning forum here at allnurses.com.

If you are just beginning your nursing school I would suggest taking Anatomy and Physiology, microbiology atleast. Most programs require some sort of chemistry as well. No matter what degree or route you choose you will need those classes. I have heard that online courses are expensive. If you look into some regular schools in your area you may find some of them offer online classes as well and the price may not be as steep as Exselsior or whom ever you were looking into.

Good luck to you. University of Phoenix is very expensive. I'd definately look around.

Welcome.

Hi, I'm in Phoenix and I am taking my prereqs online through Rio Salado. After that I want to do the part time program at GCC. Much cheaper than University of Phoenix!

Most colleges have classes that you can take online. Check into your CC, they are MUCH cheaper.

I looked into Rio Salado. I wrote to them awhile back and never got a reply. I wanted to know what classes to start with. I have already taken some but don't know where to begin. Who did you speak to there? What classes did you start with? What is GCC?
Thanks for the help,
Debbie

I started with Psychology, Intro to algebra, med terminology, fundamentals in health care delivery. I had previously taken food & nutrition and English 101. I work full time, so the online courses are a godsend. I can only manage about two classes at a time. I actually talked to the advisors at GCC (Glendale Community College) and they gave me the list of prereqs. GCC has a part time and a full time program. Here are some links you might find helpful:

Let me know if you need any more info.
