Hey guys, here's my intro since I already posted a question on the career forum and I'm sure everyone prefers we do an intro relatively soon. My name's Tim, as you probably figured out from my user name, and as you can also guess I'm into scuba diving. I'm 24, been an EMT for close to a year on a BLS transport, and now ALS transport, rig and I've been doing junior college full-time for 3 years to get my GE and major pre-reqs out of the way before I start at UC Davis this Fall.
I originally was majoring in biology in college because I was pre-med, but due to the many problems with medicine that I don't foresee being fixed in my lifetime such as litigation, massive (and rising at an alarming rate) debt, decreasing salary, respect and autonomy, I've decided against being a doctor and switched my major to managerial economics.
I'd like to advance where I'm at in health care further despite deciding not to become a doctor, but due to the miserable pay that medics make, I've decided that I don't want to be poor for the rest of my life so I'm looking at a few specialties of nursing (ER and OR) now as a result.
In my off time I actually don't really do much else outside scuba dive as much as possible...I play video games when someone else has a console since I don't own one, and I'll go to movies, read books, the usual stuff, but it's mostly diving. I have been certified since last November, I'm currently a PADI Rescue Diver, although technically a PADI Dive Master Candidate now which is the first professional rank, and I have 34 dives logged off the coast of Monterey and Channel Islands. I actually plan to be a dive instructor part-time at some point, but since dive instructors probably make even less than paramedics, that will be a passion rather than a profession to me. I'm more interested in helping people than amassing a ridiculous amount of wealth, so as a result, I'll probably try to do a certain amount of scuba instruction alongside any other job I have so I get to make a difference regardless of what job I hold.
I'm not particularly fond of office jobs, and I'm rather indifferent to money, hence why I don't plan to get a job with my degree once I graduate. I realize that you won't love your job 100%, but if you hate it 100%, then that's a problem. I also only view money as a tool, so I just want to make enough to dive when I want to then call it good. Well, that's about all I can think of right now!
