New med surg nurse

Hi I'm Ginny and new to this forum. I have been on orientation for 4 weeks at St. Francis Medical Center. Today was such a busy day for me with 3 patients all needing IV meds. I realized how little experience I had as a student today with IV Fluids and meds. Any input and tips would be welcome.

Re: New med surg nurse

I've been on orientation in med-surg going on 10 weeks. My hospital keeps a protocol book of i.v. meds at all pyxis'. I look up every med I hang/push. I use to ask preceptor about the fluids hanging w/compatibility to meds, now I look these up myself. I have a total of 6 pts. ea. day and feel like I'm always chasing my tail. I do manage to get everything done, with my preceptor doing just a few things for me (if I ask her for help). I get all meds out on time, assessments charted by 10:00 am ( I work 7a to 7p). Organization is the key!! We can give meds 1 hr b-4 & 1 hr after. I usually start passing meds the hr b-4. I keep a sheet on ea. pt, and as orders come in, I add the "new orders" to ea. pts. sheet so that I can give a good report to next shift. I've definitely improved, still don't have enough time sometimes to look thru charts, but I'll just keep working at it! You will become more acquainted w/ meds when you stay on the same floor. You'll start remembering "Oh yea, I did this one b-4". It just gets easier.
