Never Too Late to Start Life Long Dreams

Hello All,

I am new to the site and I am a pre-nursing student. Nursing has been my life long dream, however, I started accounting many years ago and did not have the courage to pursue my real dream. I want to do more in life than office work, I want to give back and help others. I started my pre-reqs about 1 1/2 years ago. This was a big step... the same year I turned 50. I firmly believe we are never too old to learn and dreams only die when we do. I would love to hear from other students who are back in school later in life.

Re: Never Too Late to Start Life Long Dreams

Dear Lifelong Dream

I am 55 and about to start my first semester of ADN, I've had a year of pre reqs and did extremely well with that. You are right it is never too late, I had always said if it took me until I was 90, I would have a college education. Some unpleasant life circumstances spurred me to renew my childhood dream of nursing. So far I am very happy with my decision, though a little nervous about the stresses I am reading about on these boards. I like the quote I read today about eating the elephant one bite at a time. Good luck.

Thumbs up Re: Never Too Late to Start Life Long Dreams

You all are right. It's never too late!

I just graduated right before Christmas and am preparing for the NCLEX-RN. I am 38 yrs. old and started pre-req's back in 2002. This is also my second degree.

In my nursing class, there were several 30 and 40 yr. olds, about four students in their 50's, and one that was 66 yrs. old when she graduated.

Nursing school is funny for us non-traditionals. It is definitely challenging and will sometimes wear you out (mentally more than physically, but don't worry- it wore out most of the youngsters quicker- lol) but it also made me feel young again. Good luck and congratulations on following your dream.

I am extremely proud that I met my goals. When you make it through nursing school, you've really accomplished something!!

Re: Never Too Late to Start Life Long Dreams

I take my nurse cap off to those of you fulfilling your lifelong dreams of becoming a nurse. I admire you for that. Keep at it. You're right, one bite of that elephant at a time! Or, one day at a time, or even one hour at a time, as I used to say way back in the day when I was in nursing school...! GOOD LUCK!!!

That is wonderful and very inspiring! Good luck to you also! My theory is two classes at a time and I really think our age brings extra determination because we feel we need to prove ourselves! Best wishes!

Re: Never Too Late to Start Life Long Dreams

Thank you for the encouragement! Sometimes I sense others thinking... why at this time in my life? I just say why not! I just have to know I am giving my dream everything I have. Thanks so much.
