1) Good opportunity for somebody who has a caregiver personality. Not for the person who just wants to make money. Nurses get assaulted, insulted, and rewarded sometimes by the same patient. Don't even get me started on worried families threatening lawsuits or accusing in someway or needing just as much help as their sick loved one.
2) The pay I receive could support a family of four: car payment, modest mortgage payment. Nurses make about $19 - $22 to start.
3) Health care benefits include eye, dental, PPO/HMO options ranging from $368.00 a month for a family of five for a part-time nurse and $125.00 a month if nurse is fulltime. Same benefits for all hospital employees.
4)I enjoy educating people regarding the disease process so they may enjoy a healthier life style or slow/stop the disease process.
5) Day to day opportunities? Opportunities come with time and experience.
6)Assessment, pt and nurse education, passing medication safely, IV insertion, telemetry monitoring, wound care, throw in an occasional code blue, charting, charting, charting.
7) I would recommend this job to anybody who can put up with number 1)
8) 40hrs/week, physically and emotionally demanding
9)Community college usually a 3 year degree for RN-ADN opens up floor nursing which is the traditional idea of patient care; 4 year college/university for a RN-BSN which opens up management positions; university level masters degree for RN-MSN which allows the nurse to teach clinicals to RN students add on (I think) a year or two of diagnostic clinicals to become a RN-PN. These nurses can write prescriptions under MD supervision; a RN-PhD allows a nurse to teach lecture/theory at most major universities and perform research work.
10)Making a difference in a persons life who may just need a guiding hand to put them on the right tract. One of my better nursing moments: a very tired, devoted 30 year old daughter was on her way home. I ran up to her and told her to stay just a few more hours that I thought her mother would pass soon. Got her coffee and a comfortable chair. The daughter stayed. When her mother passed on, the daughter thanked me over and over again. Her mother's greatest fear was to die alone. I've seen nurses so devoted they stay 'off the clock' at a pt bedside, because the person didn't want to die alone.
11)My advice: don't believe the Johnson and Johnson commercials, "I can't have a bad day." Uggh! Yes you can! RN's are responsible for pt care. If it is not charted, then it is not done. There are many rewards in this career. My advice is to work in a hospital/nursing home to get a feel for it before spending the college money. It's a great way to see if the job is right for oneself. I've never regretted my career, even on the bad days. I love the job.
