Hi Everyone I am Heather I am looking into the field of Nursing. More into becoming a L&D nurse. I'm working on gettin my GED. I am 22 years old. My husband is currently deployed to Iraq and has been there for 6 months already. The questions I have are:

How do I get into nursing?
How can I get my RN when I move every 3 years?
Should I try to get my CNA and move up or just go straight for my RN?
Is there any online classes I can take to help speed up everything I need to do?

I am just starting out. I don't know much but I am trying to learn everything as fast as possible to get started. I don't wanna rush on getting where I wanna be. But I wanna know how long this will take and if it's possible to get what I need done in 3 years. I am going to try to get a job at a nursing home to help me out. I am willing to do whatever it takes to get to the place I need to be. I have 6 more months to get started on everything before my husband returns. Then I have 1 year before we are moving to another duty station, which I will be there for 3 years. I am starting late. But I am doing my best to learn what I need to do. So any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank You

I was an orderly for a year...then went to an LPN Program in 1998...and graduated in 1999....working as an LPN at the end of 1999 until 2003...when I became an RN.
Since you have to move Q 3 years, my recommendation is to go from CNA to LPN(only 1 year)....then the RN Program.....

By the way, you are still young...only 22 years old....way too young....the average age for an RN is, if I am not wrong, 47 years old.

22 is not "way to young" - I'm 24 and have been a nurse for 2 years (in May)

I graduated with some nurses that were younger than I was.


Look into local colleges and universities - you may be able to start taking pre-req's such as math, english, psych, and sociology. Those classes you will have to get out of the way before you start the "real" nursing classes.

I know you said you're working on getting your GED (contratulations!!) One thing to investigate if you're living on post while your husband is deployed is that there are lots of education programs available to the military & their families. Make sure you check out Family Education Programs in whatever branch you are -- often you can get help with tuition, enrollment procedures, career planning, etc... Maybe this is all stuff you already know... if so, just remember they are a great resource not to be over-looked. And don't worry -- you're NOT late You're right on time. Take it one step at a time -- get the GED, start some pre-reqs for a BSN or ADN (like basic Bio, Chem, Math) and take a deep breath! You are surely under a LOT of stress with your husband deployed (I know that awful feeling ) so try to take some YOU time in the midst of it all. Best of luck!!
