Hello...I'm new to Allnurses...

Hello everyone...I'm new to the forum. I've been nursing for four years now and feel like I'm at a crossroads in my nursng career. I feel like I need to move on to something new but feel apprehensive about where that someplace new could be...I've been in med/surg this whole time...any suggestions from your own experiences of where to go from here?

Hello and Welcome AlbertaBlue to All Nurses!
Gosh, Med-Surg is nothing to sneeze at. Wish I had some words of wisdom for you, but my synapses have long stopped snappin'! Worked med surg before going into critical care nursing 30 years ago. Recently started a new position at the VA Medical Center and am working a med surg floor. Can't believe how stressful it is! I am thinking long and hard about going back into the ICU.
Good luck in what ever course you choose and welcome again to All Nurses!
Respectfully,
athena

Re: Hello...I'm new to Allnurses...

Hello AlbertaBlue, I know exactly the situation your're in. I've made three major changes in my nursing career. I worked 7 years in internal medicine, then 3 in a geriatric reha. unit, and now I've been in home care nursing for the last 5 years or so. Don't forget that one of the great things about our profession is that we have so many options open and changes are readily possible. I of course can't suggest to you where you should try your luck next. Only you know what might interest you. As corny as it sounds, just follow your instinct. I remember when I first started working in a hospital and how I thought that I could never work as a home care nurse. Now I couldn't imagine ever working anywhere else. As we grow older and change our needs in nursing also change. You will find you new path!

Re: Hello...I'm new to Allnurses...

Thanks to everyone for your welcome messages! I do agree with all of you that I should listen to my sense of intuition re: where to go from here. The trouble that I'm finding is that I'm really not sure that the grass is greener on the other side in terms of the stress factor that is provoking me to leave med/surg in the first place. Sometimes I think that it would be a lot less stressful working an assembly line job where the hardest part of the shift was pressing an on/off switch! Nursing just seems to be getting more stressful. Anyhow...I do appreciate your input. Thanks
