I'm a young one, I just turned 21!! I have all of my pre-reqs for a BSN, but found that the community college has more bang for the buck, so I'm waiting to start an ADN program (I plan on bridging to a BSN when I finish). I should hear any day now if I was accepted!!!!
I have been a volunteer EMT with a local fire department for five years now. I knew I wanted to be a nurse, and thought that by becoming an EMT I would see a little bit of everything, and be better able to choose which field of nursing I wanted to go into. Well, I quickly found out that EMS is a field of its own, and I'm hooked!!! My ultimate dream is to be a flight nurse (I'm all of 5' and 100lbs soaking wet, so I should be a good candidate). As an EMT, I've flown with the Maryland Sate Police (who provide Maryland's MedEvac) on several occassions, and I LOVE IT!!!
In addition to being an EMT, I have worked as a student at a state mental hospital, an assisted living facility as a caregiver, and my second favorite: as an EMT/CNA/CMT at a county detention center.
I currently work everyother weekend in an Emergency Room at a county hospital as an Emergency Room Tech. Sure, I change diapers and get vital signs, but I also start IV's, draw blood, insert foley caths, EKG's, etc... I can honestly say that I LOVE MY JOB (I'm not there enough to get into the politics and administration stuff... lucky me!!). I consider myself a sponge, and I love to learn!!
Oh, and my mom loved the stories that I brought home enough that she quit her accounting job, and went back to school full-time to also become a nurse!! It has been a great bonding experience... we help eachother out when we hit difficult material, and have even taken classes together. We're the teacher's worst nightmare... we pass notes back and forth!!!!
I'm so glad that I found such a great site! Hats off to such a great group of nurses!
