Changing Careers.....

Call me crazy but I think I am going to change careers. I have a degree in Electrical Engineering and have been writing software for about 8 years. I have never been interested in climbing the management ladder, but I get big satisfaction in helping people. It seems to me, that nursing has been so called recession proof unlike the IT industry that I am in now. My mother gave up 25 years with the phone company to go back and get her RN. She has been a nurse for about 14 years. I will be 36 in August and will start pre. reqs. in the fall of 2004. I will be taking night courses and my wife is in full support. Let me hear from other career changers out there.

Well, I changed careers before really starting! I was very close to my business degree with a job offer in real esate...but I have walked away from it all (with a lot of non-supportive comments from those around me) to start a LPN program in Sept. (hopefully start!)

Congratulations-Best of Luck & Welcome!

There are many newcomers. I spent 25 years in the restaurant industry. The long hours and cutthroat nature of the business did me in. Now I'm entering a new career that has long hours and probably some people who have "cut throats." In my ADN program there are people from varied careers that are signing up. It seems to me a great starting point whatever your career goals may be. Plus you get to be a part of something noble; relieving the suffering of your fellow man.
