I'm a new grad, I work in the ICU.... and I have always been interested in being in an ambulance. What can I do as an RN for this? Would I have to take extra classes? I am totally clueless... but I'd love to do that (pre-hospital work) like, on the side~ Advice please??

Check with your state EMS board. At a bare minimum I believe all states make you take the EMT basic course and in some states if you do some pre-requisites you can challenge the NREMT-P exam.

Illinois has a license for a pre-hospital RN. There aren't many of us but those of us that do pre-hospital love it! Its essentially up to your medical director of the region that you live in, as to what you need to do. For instance, I had three years in a level one ER, working on a daily basis with the medical director. The only thing I had to do was some ride time and away I went. If you would like more details, let me know. I live in central IL and volunteer on a rural fire/EMS squad and have for seven years - I've been in the same ER for 10 years now.

Trauma, I too am interested. Currently I am on a local vol. ambo as a EMTB. I will be done with my BSN in Dec. (woohoo). Should I just contact our EMS system? I assume that's the answer, any insight is great. Thanks

YEs, just contact your EMS medical director. I also run (volunteer) with an EMT-B non-transporting rural service and have for over 7 years - absolutely love it too.

With your RN, you can work in an SCT-ambulance with two paramedics on board for a private service in Chicagoland area.

What part of central Ill. ? I have my NREMTP, haven't looked to see if ILL. recognizes that or would I still have to take an exam...thanks for any info.

I am an EMT-B and also trying to get my PHRN in Illinois. I am almost positive that Illinois does accept NREMT-P.
