Am I Competitive??

I will be applying this year for entry for the '08 class in a few RN programs. The more I read these boards the less sure I am that I'll even get a chance! It seems it's very competitive. I was wondering if I even have a shot (I know there is no definitive answer on here). I have 77 credit hours from both Marshall and Mountain State with a total GPA of 3.05 and an ACT of 25. I'm worried because I have several W's and a couple of F's in there-- a vast majority of them were University approved withdrawals due to illness. I hope this doesn't hurt me. Obviously, I still have the entrance exams to take as well. Is there any hope for schools such as Southern, WV State, Bluefield State, etc. Just feeling anxious about the whole thing now...ugh .

Thumbs up Re: Am I Competitive??

Southern only requires an overall GPA of 2.0. Selection is based on a point system. An ACT composite score of 25 will give you points, as will grades of "B" or better in EN 101 and EN 102, and Human Anatomy I and II. If you have certifications, ie CNA, EMT-B, etc, or degrees you will receive points. Finally you must achieve 100 or better on the NLN Pre-RN exam. This year 214 points were possible on the exam.

The only pre-reqs are the eligibility to enter college level English or math.
This may be achieve by ACT or ASSET scores, having enrolled in, or compelted EN 101 and math 100 level or higher, or having taken developmental courses.

Southern's program is very competitive, but what do you expect from the number 1 nursing program in WV. Good luck!

Re: Am I Competitive??

Wow a 25 on the ACT is pretty good but those F grades may hurt you especially if they were in anatomy, english or math. You will have to be flexible, I would apply at every school I could attend to increase your chances.

You may want to look at taking those classes you failed over, I think most colleges have a grade forgiveness policy. If you do take them over though, make sure you talk to people about picking the right instructors.

As I understand it, most grade forgiveness policies only affect the graduation status. i.e. they will forgive a grade in order to get you graduated, not to improve your gpa in general.....?

Re: Am I Competitive??

Wow, thanks for making me feel old . I just realized it has been 13 years since I started college. From the way I remember it, grade forgiveness would help improve your gpa but I cannot remember the exact specifics.

It definitely depends on the school though.

Re: Am I Competitive??

I've checked on most of the schools -- they use a scoring sheet to give everyone a fair shot. I'll also have an associates degree by that time which helps with the points and am retaking some classes. So, we'll see!

Wink Re: Am I Competitive??

At my community college, you can retake the course over and they will take the better grade and apply that to your gpa only. You have to take the exact same course. Same # etc. I am doing that with Biology. I got a D way back in the day and I want to bring it up to (god willing) at least a B. It can be done at the community level I guess, not sure of 4 year level though ..hope this helps. PS I also have a few W's from back in the day too.
