What do I need to do in order to work in the ER?

I would like to work in the ER as a Tech, CNA, PCT...something, while I finish my pre-req's and attend Nursing school.

What do I need to do to land a job in the ER. I would like to do as much clinically as possible.

I will be a EMT (Basic) soon. I start the course in late spring. Can I work as a Tech if I am an EMT. What other training do I need?

I think that I might like to be on the Trauma Team once I finish with my nursing program.

Can some of you please point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Re: What do I need to do in order to work in the ER?

I just started teching at one of the two level one trauma centers here in Portland,OR. I can give you a few pointers and a little advice.

Every ED is different in thier requirements for techs. The other level one here in Portland wants thier techs to be EMT-P certified. Where I work EMT-B,CNA or MA is good enough to get you in the unit. You should be doing at least one ED rotation before completion of your B class at least thats a requirement here in WA where Im certified. The ED techs are usually your perceptors for your rotation so it would be a good time to ask questions.

One thing I have noticed is the techs who came from transport really have a leg up, just knowing your way around is a great help. If no tech positions are available start in transport and then its a pretty easy move into the tech position when one becomes available. If you have any questions let me know.

Doug

Re: What do I need to do in order to work in the ER?

The ER at the hospital I do my clinicals at only has EMT's as techs. It's a level I, so that may have something to do with not letting those who do not have significant training work in the ER. They also do not hire nurses right out of school, they prefer at least 2 years experience and require at least 1. Perhaps if the ER you're trying to get into is a lower level they would allow it, but I'm sure it varies with each hospital's policies. You could always try calling or writing the nurse manager to see if you'd be able to work in the ER.
