Our coworker wants to be the manager and we get to interview him...

So our CNO wants us to ask the tough questions to our coworker about why he wants to be the department manager.

This coworker mind you has only worked for us for a few months, is big on mox( like internal email)ing adminstration about anything anyone says, always feels that he needs to justify his actions and does not like it when people question him. Some of his current suggestions for hospital improvement is ( over the intercom mind you) TAPS when people die, Happy Birthday when a birth happens and prayer everynight when we lock the doors. He was run off his last job for imposing his religious beliefs on the staff.

Needless to say we don't want him to take the job, no matter how thankless it is. Any suggestions for interview questions?

Taps whenever someone dies? Hell why not Eric Clapton's "Stairway to Heaven" or ACDC's "Highway to Hell" lol that's ridiculous, as far as questions I would ask stuff like You've only been here a x amount of months how do you know you are well versed enough in hospital policy and have the support of those on this unit to be an effective manager? stuff like that, jeeze what a loon. Then again maybe I'm being to harsh, I'm in a bad mood lol

What do you bring to the table that warrants a nurse's employment with you?

What types of education/certifications do you think is/are needed?

What do you think others expect from the person in this position?

If you were the mamager nurse, how would you organize the work assignment and how much time per shift would you give to each area?

What area(s) has the highest priority?

How are call ins and short staffing issues handled by the manager?

If you were to accept this posistion what do you think ypu should have learned in the first week? The first month? At the end of orientation?

Just a few off the top of my head

How would you handle coworkers who disagreed with you?

Do you feel that staffers ought to have a voice with management?

"How do you feel about proselytizing in the workplace? Do you feel it is appropriate?"

You all better be praying he doesn't get the job.
Sounds like a nutcase to me.

I agree with everyone so far, sounds like trouble. Love Ben's suggestion re: stairway to heaven! lol!!!
Okay - having been a staff member who got promoted to unit director, here's a few....
How will you deal with a sick call on the night shift? Will you be willing to work as staff whenever there is a shortage? (That's a requirement for directors where I am now. I have personally had to go home, sleep for a few hours and come back in to cover night shift in ICU to cover sick call.)
What is your approach when another department complains about one of your staff? Do you assume that department is correct or do you try to get your employee's side of the story first?
What methods do you prefer for motivating and encouraging your staff?
How would you deal with poor morale in your department?
If there is a conflict between one of your staff and a physician, do you automatically side with the physician? How would you deal with this?
Good luck! Let us know how it goes!!
OH - one last thought - is there anyone else in the dept. who might be wlling to take the job? Sometimes it's better to take the job yourself so you don't end up with a bonehead in the position instead.
