Inappropriate ER doc?

Thanks to all who read my other er thread re: strep throat. I was wondering about something that happened while I was at said ER for the allergic rxn to the abx I was given. So the doc who came in to see me was a little odd, slightly twitchy, and I thought maybe he was at the end of a really long shift or maybe an odd duck in general. At one point we were discussing the original throat infection, and okay, I was being a little whiny about how much it hurt. I told him that Tylenol, ibuprofen, and Vicodin had had little effect. Okay, fine, maybe he thinks I'm drug-seeking, even thought I never asked for any pain meds, he asked if anything worked, and I honestly said no. Then he says "Well, have you done anything bad you think you're being punished for?" WHAT? I asked him if he meant he thought I was on drugs/drug seeking, and he said no, he just wondered if I thought I was being punished with this awful pain. I'm thinking about mentioning this in the pt survey the hosp sent me afterwards. It made me really uncomfortable. Was this as inappropriate as it seemed???

WHAAAAAT?

More like utterly ridiculous. Maybe he had a really dry sense of humour?

Maybe he was trying to find out if you've been sword swallowing on your free time and therefore being punished?

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. How old was this guy anyways? Not that it matters..just wondering.

Sounds like a weirdo to me.
I would definitely write it up in the survey to the hospital.

He was maybe, I don't know, late 40s, early 50s? Probably not an intern? The funny part was he wasn't the doc on my admit bracelet. I know, obviously things change on the board, but for a second I wondered if maybe this guy just wandered into the ER w/a lab coat and wasn't really a dr???

Like, it's fine if you don't want to take me seriously because I'm 24, but don't be all creepy Constantine about it!!!

puts on flame suit. sorry, constantine freaked me out!

Constantine freaked my DW out too. You're not alone.

Maybe this guy was into....punishment? If that's the case, this is all pretty pigish (and I apologize to any pigs I've insulted). Was he trying to hit on you or what?

Hmmm, maybe. I usually have pretty good radar (some say oversensitive) for being hit on, and it wasn't so much that vibe. 'Course, I was doing a breathing treatment at the time, so maybe the sensors were down. Weird. Eh, I'll report it on the survey form and they can deal with it. I more got the impression that he was making fun of me and being a boor about it. Maybe I should have told him I was being punished for all those satanic rites I had done to try to heal the strep in the first place!

I hope you do say something about this. I work in an ER with an extremely weird MD. He says and does inappropriate things, just not enough that I could report him and be taken serious, but enough to keep EVERYONE that work in the ER freaked out by him. I have spoken with my nurse manager about these and she says that she needs written proof. Maybe the nurses at that ER are dealing with the same thing and your report may help. BTW I work in a field where my instincts are necessary to the job and my instincts SCREAM everytime he is in the ER. I believe in following your instincts, so please say something.

Red face Cultural thing?

Apparently some cultures believe that pain/illness is punishment for bad deeds. Maybe that's what he was trying to get at - a psychosomatic something or other.
