Talking HELP! TWO E.D. job offers for new grad

Hello all. I am going to be graduating May 18th and well anyway I have two job offers on the table and I want to suceed in my new position so I am looking for oppinions from experienced nurses on which one I may be more successful in based on the info I relay in this post. So here is the info:

Both jobs are in emergency rooms as you may have already guessed.

Job 1:

*Level II trauma Center sees about 60,000 patients a year

*Expanding to 25 beds + 6 non-urgent beds with normal RN/Patient ratio of 1:4

*New grad progam:
10 weeks of one day a week in a classroom
5 weeks of Med surg before going to the E.D. to help with my organizational skills as a new grad.
Continued preceptorship for about 12 weeks after going down to the E.D. + or - depending on my abilities I guess.
They have hired new grads to the E.D. in the past years.

* All charting is computerized and doctors enter their own orders. Made transition to this system a month ago.

* I am VERY familar with the hospital and the ER staff and hospital staff because I am a paramedic in this service area. Also worked at this hospital 10 years ago as an E.D. tech.

*24.80 is the new grad rate plus shift diffs. (state income tax)

* Still waiting to hear more info about hours I would be offered (may only offer 8 hour shifts and nights). I woud prefer 12 hour evening shifts.

* Benifits are about average

* would start in June becuase the state allows GN licence until taking NCLEX.

Job 2

*Level II trauma Center sees about 63,000 patients a year

*Expanding to 37 beds and has a non-urgent center that is free standing. RN ratio can be 1:4 and up to 1:8 depending on patient acuity.

*New grad progam:
12 weeks of one day a week in a classroom including critical care track
Continued preceptorship for about 12 weeks + or - in the E.D.
They have not hired new grads in at least 2-3 years in their E.D. and only made an exception because of my EMS experience.

*Will be going through a transition to computerized charting and phsycians entering their own orders in a few months when their new addition opens.

* I am only familiar with parts of the hospital becuase I did a couple clinical rotations on the floors. I do not know anyone in the E.D. except for the person who interveiwed me for the position.

*21.50is the new grad rate plus shift diffs. (no state income tax)

* Offered 12 hour evening shift

* Benifits are about average except health insurance stinks. I am 29 and pretty healthy anyway, although I probably just jinxed myself.

* would not be able to start until July 23 becuase I need to take and pass NCLEX before starting as the state does not allow GN to practice.

Soooooo..... Any oppions on which one may allow me to be more successful in my transition??? thanks for any help.

#1

You've worked there in the past, have experience with their set up and are familiar with the workings which will make your transition far less painful.

They seem to have a great new grade orientation process already in place and they are willing to accept new grads with open arms.

I say #1 too. They are more experienced with working with new grads and have a program in place.

Definitely #1. You want a facility that already has a training program in place for you. Not one that will make things up as they go. That is the most important part of when you start, getting the proper training, and you are already familiar with the facility and they are familiar with you.

As a new grad 2 years ago I had 3 ER job offers. I took the one with the most structured orientation program. I think it was the right choice.

Good luck to you.

Hey swtooth!
I would say go with option 1 cause you know the people and the department. It will make a huge difference!
Have a great one, girl
