I finally to the initiative to apply for an ER position. Well, I didn't say it before but I have been out of the hospital for many years as a staff nurse. Even though my background is in critical care areas and recently five years in urgent care, the hospital requires a refresher course if you want a position in the hospital. I need a summer job but the course is fall and spring semesters at the local college for $1200. I don't think I want to spend it but it's a thought. The best money is in the hospital and eventually, I could do management. So, for now, I am looking at non hospital alternatives. Thanks for the encouragment in my recent post about being to old for ER.

The state may require refresher courses too. Better check with the Board or you may not be able to work as RN.

Sounds like a bunch of crap to me. You have prior critical care experience and spent the last 5 years working critical care, yet the hospital still wants you to take a 1,200 dollar refresher? So, you get the job only after throwing down your money to take their course? Any other hospitals in your area?

It is what is sounds like to me but the other hospital in the area of course, can do the same thing and they do. I didn't work in critical care for 5 years but I worked in urgent care. I think it isn't worth it to hire most people out of the loop becaue they don't know the equipment? I don't know. You still have to get an orientation with med test, IV course etc. I am just disappointed that it has to be $1200. I hope it's a good one if I try it. Some refresher courses are a joke. This hospital has a good reputation though so it would be worth it. If i am serious, i can apply for a job and they will reimburse me if I give them six months. So, i have a little time to think.

Typo on my part. Should have written " urgent ." What better preparation for ER than urgent care? 1,200 bucks to learn how to use that ER's magic equipment? Please, call BS when you see it. Do travel nurses have to take this course prior to working in your area? Sounds like the hospital has a good thing going, hitting new employees up for money.

If you work in urgent care - is it hospital-affiliated? Are they the ones that want you to take the $1200 course? Whew - I would think long and hard about this. Almost sounds like they want you to pay for your orientation.
