I was under the impression that all school nurses recieved a $2000 pay raise this year. Only to find out that two of our school nurse's did not get one. The school said that it is because they are LVN's. Well our school system has 6 nurses and 2 are bach. nurses 2 have their ADN and 2 are LVNS. They all do the same job no one is over any one else but one of the LVN's has been there for 12 years, longer than anyone else. I just don't believe that this is fair. And wanted to know how everyone else felt about it.

School's pay scales are based on the degree held by the individual and the additive years of experience. Many districts post this online.

School nurses are paid on the same salary schedule as teachers in most districts. This is the norm.

Associates (or 1 year certificate) degreed positions are not generally recognized as degreed positions in education.

Well I think it sucks . And I see we are talking about Texas here... hummmm no surprise there. If you notice there are no opportunities for LVN's anymore and what makes me very very angry is all these sign on bonus's that are offered for RN's not the ones for hospitals, but the ones for nursing homes. If your job performace is satisfactory then what kind of raise are they offerring the LVN's ..nothing????? I just feel sorry for you. I will write more when I officially wake up...lolololol

They wouldnt hire someone with a 1 or 2 year degree and pay them to teach - they would hire them as a teachers aide. If the teachers aide wants teachers pay, then she can go back to school and get the teaching degree. What's so unfair about that?

My friends in Ohio say its the same there.

On the flip side - we NEED LVN's. There are just flat not enough RN's to go around and there never will be. The only way to attract them and keep them is to PAY them!

The sad thing about all of this is that we do hire teachers that have not passed their exit exam and they still get the pay of the teachers who have passed. When all are doing the exact same job I believe that the pay should reflect that. Alos you need to take in the experince we have lost 2 LVN this year because of pay and they don't wont to hire any RN's here because of what they pay them. So... looks like they are stuck and if you love your job you are going to have to take a second job just to make ends meet. That is what I am doing!!!

Ok but everyone deserves a raise .. so what are they giving the LVN's. You wont keep your LVN's if you dont give them fair share and then they will quit causing more work for the RN..... Alot of school districts hire LVN's, your making it sound as if they have to settle for LVN's because there is not enough RN's to go around and they should just be happy to have a job, whether ot not you get a raise.... I dont want to turn this into a debate LVN vs RN, but I would not work in a facility if the RN's were the only one's who received raises. LVN's shouldnt have to wait until they are RN's before they are given a raise...

So does a RN with an associate degree fit into this. Not every school district hires BSN nurses for their schools ,so there is no way this can be a correct assumption that most districts are ran this way. If so there is no way you would keep your staff. My school district has LVN's at every elem ,intermediate and middle school ,there is a RN at the High school . I know this woman and she has a AAS (if it is the same woman). There has not been a job opening in a while cause Im waiting for it , so the pay may not be all that but they must treat them fairly.

ADN's fall into the same category as LVN's as far as most school districts are concerned. Many of them didnt' qualify for the raises either because apparently that is the way the state worded it and then left it up to the school districts to make a final determination.

Larger school districts are in fact now hiring just BSN's in most cases as permanant FT staff, ADN's and LVN's are hired as part time or contract staff. Dallas ISD is one example, and they dont hire ADN's or LVN's at all according to my source.

Not saying I agree with it - just that I am aware that that is the way it is done.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but our hospital gave the "nurses" a retention bonus. Come to find out that my clinical manager and some of the other RNs had to fight to get the LVNs something as we were destined to be overlooked. I got half of what the RNs got. By the way, I have been there the longest (since the hospital opened- 6yrs). The other RNs have only been there 3 yrs.

It's part of the reason why I am going back to school. It's just the way it is and always will be...unfortunately.
