you can still try. as long as your pre reqs are finished and you have taken the HESI and will take pharma, you can still have a big chance of being considered.

The current director Ms. Rich is the interim chairperson (thank god) hopefully she isn't permanent as she is a real piece of work. I have had an awful experience with her and the secretary. I don't why their attitudes are set to discourage students. I was actually told to take pharmacology elsewhere because I wasn't getting in her program. I have taken all my academics, the CNA, and even phlebotomy at HCC campuses and have never met such negative people. I will try one last time to jump through their hoops. But if I have to enrol in another school to take pharmacology I will just stay there after my experience with these two "ladies".. PS I have a 4.0 gpa... I can imagine how they have gotten away with treating other....all in all so far if they are representatives of the rest of the faculty I would advise everyone to spend their hard earned money in another program. Also keep in mind HCC was at risk of having their credentials as a school revoked due to the instructors being caught dumping students at hospitals by the board of nursing..(which is apparently illegal and they seem to be still doing at least at my hospital..)

Wow! I didn't know that! I already applied, I did that in Feb and passed the HESI, I'm just waiting to hear from them, I'm taking the Pharm class this summer but in North Harris, the only thing that worries me is that HCC says you have to pass a Pharm test with like a 90%?

My husbands cousin is in the program, she loves the program. She has met a lot of students from the programs (UT, TWU, etc.) around houston while on clinicals in the med center. EVERYONE has something negative to say about their program. As far as HCC, I havent had an issue with anyone treating me wrong. I have also noticed that the secretary doesnt have any time to chit chat she gets straight to the point about EVERYTHING. She has been very nice to me on the phone, in person, and she responds to my emails pretty quick. So far so good for me! I do know that it is very hard to get into the program. So we will see what happens for this fall.
Pinky:
Where do you plan on taking Pharm? I really dont want to drive to the med center for it if I can help it! The secretary did tell me that they are trying to add a saturday class and another in town & country.
You need to call/email the secretary the week of May 1st to enroll and pay for pharmacology. I believe its the students responsibility to do so. I just purchased my book for the math section and hoping to get a head start. You do have to pass a math test, which is the final i believe, with a 90% or better. Anyway, if you pass this you are almost guaranteed a spot in the program. My gf couln't think of anyone who aced and passed the final in phar, and didnt get a spot in the program. So heads up!

There is a new counselor at the nursing department (replaced Linder Sneed who left. It was no wonder my emails were going unanswered!!) She is very helpful and took the time to clearly explain everything to me. If you passed the HESI before March 31, you'll be admitted into the summer Pharm class, and will be considered for admission in the fall.
I've had a difficult time trying to get answers from a lot of the staff at the nursing department. Txgirl is right, the admissions secretary is very busy and to the point. Be clear about what you need to know, and you'll get the answers you need!
Every program is going to have ups and downs, and a program as big as HCC's is probably going to get a disproportionate amount of bad press.

Jason,
Did the counselor have any suggestions for the pharmacology? Did she give you a heads up about it? I wonder how true it is if you pass the class you will most likely get in. I am actually wondering if the books will change for the fall as well. lol, I hope not.

Knowing my luck, the book will change! I plan to get it early anyway. Search google for "hccs rnsg 1301 syllabus", you'll then get an idea of how to structure your 'advance' study... I can't guarantee it's the most up-to-date syllabus, but that's what I'm going to do anyway.
The counselor didn't tell me anything about Pharm, but I am sure it's going to be a challenge. If you're organised and disciplined (you sound like you are), I'm sure you'll do just fine. It's the science of how the drugs work in the body, the paths they take and how they work on the various kinds of receptors. The other side of it is dosages and calculations. I'm expecting to invest in some flashcards, and I'm also expecting to have a pretty quiet summer socially!

hello there!
the math test is different from the finals...when i took the pharma last summer, it was given around second week of july i believe, you have to score a 90 to pass it, but with the changing of personnel in the nursing department, i don't know if they will change. a teacher of mine said once that it should be 100 to pass it since it is drug calculations after all.
also, if you pass the course and fail the math test, you are given a second chance to take it (well, if a lot of students failed it i think, im not sure on that one) if you still fail then you won't be accepted.
pharma as it is, is very doable, i had a classmate who aced all of her test, even the math and she got an A, she is actually in the program right now.
when i took it during the summer, my teacher would just tell us which ones we need to study for the unit exams, do not pay attention to other stuff other than read it for stock knowledge. they do not beat around the bush....others said that teachers are more lenient during summer pharmacology too.
so just do not get behind on your readings
see you all guys in the orientation for fall!
