Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

Hi NoelChristine,

I am impatiently waiting to hear if I have been accepted to UPMC Shadyside for the fall term. I took and passed the PSB May 19 with 97,99,99,89(science). I spoke with Julie on June 8 and she said I should have my letter within 2 weeks if I am accepted or not. I can hardly stand the wait!

Congratulations on being accepted and hopefully we will be starting together in August.

Hi Tammy, I too am anxiously waiting for an acceptance or (heaven forbid) a rejection letter. I talked to Julie the 1st week of June and she said they still have seats available, not many (don't know the exact number). However, she also told me that the school is considering adding an additional 20 seats to this class (full-time Fall '06) and if they do so, then I'd have a very good chance of getting a seat. Unfortunately, I don't know if they've added seats or not.

Why did you choose Shadyside, Tammy? Will you be transfering any classes? I have all my non-nursing classes out of the way except for Logic and Diversity.

I hope you and I both get seats!

Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

NoelChristine,

I spoke with Julie on June 8th and she told me they had extended the class to 120 total (an extra 20) for this fall. They had 30 openings to fill when I talked to her so I am keeping my fingers crossed for both of us. I just got the mail and nothing yet.

Shadyside has a great curriculum and I also liked the full loan tuition program they offer. I live in Pittsburgh and the UPMC hospital system is a huge healthcare system here. The Hillman cancer center is one of their hospitals and I would like a chance to do some work with them. My cousin's (an RN) husband is being treated there now and it is an awesome hospital.

I have some of the classes already also but it has been so long (this is a second career for me) since I had some of them like A&P and microbiology that I may take them over again.
I hope we both get accepted I will say a prayer for both of us.

Have you decided where you are going to live when you move to Pittsburgh?? We live in the south of the city (about 20 minute drive from the school) and our neighbor has apartments for rent if you need a place let me know. He is a great person and a good landlord. If you have any questions about Pittsburgh let me know... I have lived here 15 years and my husband is a native ... we'll be glad to help.

Knowing that there were more seats added gives me hope that I'll be picked. I'm going nuts everyday when I check the mail and there is nothing.

While you can tell by my profile that I am not a Pittsburgh native, I have heard much about UPMC's wonderful hospitals. The idea of being trained by a school that has a pretty impressive NCLEX passage rate for free, and be guaranteed a job upon graduation is mainly what got me. Although, seeing how I've been on a waiting list here in Ohio for a year, the no wait is great.

Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

WOW the fact that they added seats is a very VERY good sign for you guys, Noel yes when you move to Pittsburgh let us know if you have any questions ( where to eat, go out, yeah like you will have time to do anything lol) I was born in raised in this area so i know it pretty much like the back of my hand. Also I live right across the bridge from Emsworth in Moon, you should like it this is a really nice area. I agree i loved how UPMC cirruculum was set up, and when i walked in i just got an overall good feeling about that place, i maybe could have had a shot since they may be adding seats but i gotta take what comes first ya know, but it would have been nice.

NoelChristine,

I was pleasantly surprised when I moved to Pittsburgh 15 years ago. The people here are wonderful! You will like Emsworth area.

Andy,

I agree with you the atmosphere at Shadyside seems great! I was very comfortable (even though I was taking a test!). Good luck with school in the fall.
