I'm a first year nursing instructor teaching Pharmacology. Does anyone have any creative ideas for teaching this subject?

I would suggest you use multiple strategies to present the material. When I took Pharm 4 years ago, it was strictly lecture/Powerpoint. However, there are many animations on the internet, as well as interesting graphics.

You could also set up internet-based drills or quizzes for your students to practice with, review groups, etc.

I would also present the class of drugs (ex. beta blockers), side effects of the CLASS of drugs, and then focus on individual drugs.

There is a wonderful site called Studystack.com which lets you set up "internet flashcards". Or you could encourage your students to do the same.

Good luck,

Re: Teaching Pharm

I use a few patient scenarios where I have videotaped one of my friends or family members who takes a given drug. They discuss their experiences with the drug (ex- coughing all night while taking an ACE inhibitor) and students have to discuss relevant assessment, interventions, etc for this patient and can come up with questions for the patient. I've also done this using instant messaging so that the students can ask a question of the patient. We just connect online to my hotmail IM account, and the patient is also signed in, and we can IM back and forth so it makes for a more "real time" experience for the student. You could also use video feed, but I'm not that sophisticated
