Re: Teaching @ Brown Mackie

More Brown Mackie drama! I showed up ten minutes early for my 1:00pm interview. It seemed like a nice atmosphere, enjoyed seeing all the students, etc. The room where the interview was to take place happened to be taken, so I was led to a room full of cubicals. I was going to be interviewed in a small cube with various people right there in their cubes to hear everything, no privacy at all. Well, go with the flow right? Then I was informed that Brown Mackie, just that morning had placed a freeze on hiring full-time instructors, but they were looking for adjunct/part-time instructors. So I politely said "It was my understanding that I was interviewing for a full-time position." It was agreed that this was so. Then I said "Well, I don't wish to waste your time or mine, but I'm not interested in part-time." Thanked them and that was that. No interview. I did NOT say "Why the H--- did you NOT call me this morning and let me drive 34 miles to interview for a position that no longer existed." Well, I took the high road, but quickly switched to plan "B" which involved calling my second sched. interviewer, and requested to come early if possible. They were VERY accomodating, which was handy for me. Otherwise, I would have had to stick around town for a couple hours twiddling my thumbs, or resched. for later in the week, wasting gas, traveling back and forth. Well, there ya have it

Re: Teaching @ Brown Mackie? Need Info!

I worked very short term for Brown Mackie in Indiana, and found it to be a horrible experience. I was my first attempt at clinical instruction, and I was sent in with absolutely no orientation to the school, let alone the clinical site (I was completely blind going in). To make matters worse, the students scared me to death! They had no idea what it took to be a good nurse, nor did they care. They were not the least bit interested in what I had to say-I actually had to go find them several times-they were hiding from me like a bunch of little kids. To make a loooong story short, I had no respect from the students, and no support from the school. I was turned off from teaching until I was offered a position at Ivy Tech, where I am now employed. I am happy to say the two schools have proven to be as different as night and day, and I love teaching

Yikes! Thanks so much for posting. My husband and I have been laughing about my experience (wasn't laughing at first). I am currently still entertaining different job opportunities, trying to hang on until I find the right thing for me. Yesterday he said, "well, you can ALWAYS work part-time for Brown Mackie." NOT!!!! I hope you're thriving in your Ivy Tech job .

Wow,
I sign my fin. aid papers later today to attend the Cincinnati branch. I am 44 & trying to get back into Nursing, starting all over. I want to be a RN eventually. Do Brown Mackie credits transfer? They tell me yes? What do I have to do to go further to be a RN? Is Brown Mackie a waste of time? I don't have many choices. I am in the Cincinnati State Program doing their pre-req's, but the waitng list is years! Please help!!

My experience was not a good one-this was a Brown Mackie in Indiana-could be that each campus is different depending upon staff, student demographics, etc. I personally will never have anything to do with them again, but possibly the one you are going to attend will be different. After obtaining LPN, you will need to go to a different institution, such as IVY Tech or another college offering ASN or BSN, whichever you choose to do, as Brown Mackie offers nothing as far as an RN program that I am aware of. As long as you become an LPN your credits would transfer elsewhere for an RN program I would think.

I decided not to go to Brown Mackie. It wasn't for me. They want now 25,000.00 for an LPN course that cost 9,000.00! Not that desperate! Thanks board for not letting me make the worst decision of my life!

Hello everyone. Recently Brown Mackie Indiana called me again re a full-time position. I am wondering if anyone has update on them, and if things are any better, or worse for new instructors? At least the person interviewing is the same one that was there when I last posted re this subject, which was this past May '08. I have not responded yet, and could sure use any helpful updates, good or bad. Thanks so much!

One final attempt on trying to get any updated info from anyone familiar with teaching @ Brown Mackie since my original thread last may '08. Are things any better there for instructors? If nobody can help, I'll probably just decline the interview, because I have heard so much negative, but was hoping it had changed for the better. Magical thinking?
