First I struggled with NANDA diagnoses as a student and am still struggling eith them as a faculty member grading NCPs. I recently heard that there was a movement to do away with them?!? Does anyone else have info on this?? Also - what is "impaired religiosity"? I found this listed as a new NANDA on a list published by Tabers.

Yes, it has been a diagnosis since 2004. There are actually three of them:

• Impaired Religiosity – "impaired ability to exercise reliance on beliefs and/or participate in rituals of a particular faith tradition"
• Readiness for Enhanced Religiosity – "Ability to increase reliance on religious beliefs and/or participate in rituals of a particular faith tradition."
• Risk for Impaired Religiosity – "At risk for an impaired ability to exercise reliance on religious beliefs and/or participate in rituals of a particular faith tradition."

I am looking at my copy of Nursing Diagnoses: Definitions & Classification 2005-2006 published by NANDA International and that information is on pages 151, 153, and 155, respectively. It is citing three references as supporting evidence for these diagnoses. Each page also contains this statement "the DRC recognizes that the term "religiosity" may be culture specific; the concept, however, is well supported by literature in the U.S."

These diagnoses are listed in Ackley and Ladwig's Nursing Diagnosis Handbook complete with NOC outcomes and NIC Interventions. I would assume this is not a diagnosis to tack onto every patient's care plan. Only those where the patient has expressed an interest, satisfaction or dissatisfaction with how religion has been fulfilling (or not) for them.
