Ideas for teaching lab about Chest Tubes

Hello Everyone!
I'm currently teaching a lab with some advanced skills to LPN students. I could really use some suggestions for teaching an upcoming class on chest tubes. We do not have a Thoraklex, and am told they are to expensive for the school to purchase. I suggested maybe they could get a video, but it will be to late for my class. Pictures and powerpoint is ok, but boring. Any interesting ideas out there? Happy 4th of July !!!

Atrium Med has some great training modules covering principles and nursing care on their Website:

If you have local hospitals, they may give you one for demonstration purposes.

I also think if you are close to a hospital they would probably give you one for teaching purposes. I know we have 2 available that we use for different classes.

Re: Ideas for teaching lab about Chest Tubes

You might try an inter-library loan video from other colleges in your area; it may take several days but could help until you get your own video. Also try the ER at your local hospital; a lot of times a chest tube pack is opened by mistake, or has a crack in it, and they will discard. Same thing for the medical unit in the hospital. Also the following website is good for chest tubes and other subjects. Good luck!

Atrium will send you a whole chest tube collection kit and a respiraory simulator and video. They are great. There is an area on their site for educators/education.
