First Group of Minority Nurse Faculty Scholars Selected by the
Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future and AACN
Scholarship Applications for the 2008-2009 Academic Year Are Now Available
WASHINGTON, DC, February 12, 2008 – The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future are pleased to announce that the first five Minority Nurse Faculty Scholars have been selected through a new program to address the nation’s shortage of nurse educators. This program was launched in September 2007 to provide financial support to graduate nursing students from minority backgrounds who agree to teach in a school of nursing after graduation.
“Increasing the population of nurse educators and diversifying the faculty pool are two critical needs for the nursing profession,” said Andrea Higham, director of the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future. “J&J is pleased to be working with AACN to support the development of new nurse faculty from diverse backgrounds who will serve as mentors, role models, and future leaders.”
The Johnson & Johnson/AACN Minority Nurse Faculty Scholars program supports full-time minority students enrolled in graduate nursing programs, with a preference given to students in doctoral programs. Chaired by Dr. Evelyn Calvillo from California State University-Los Angeles, the 17-member scholarship review committee selected the following recipients to receive $18,000 scholarship awards:
  • Michael Paul Cary, PhD student at the University of Virginia
  • Estrella Evangelista-Hoffman, DNP student at Touro University in Nevada
  • Nena Rashed Harris, PhD student at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
  • Nancy Ho, PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania
  • Paula Alecia Neil, PhD student at the University of Rochester
