Hey fellow educators,

As I mentioned before, I accepted a position to help rebuild and retain a successful practical nursing program (last program was closed to due low pass board rates) Well, my director has proven to me to be a very good boss and does not micro-manage. However, the co-owners of the college think that my position is a 9a-5p (monday thru friday) job because their idea of full time faculty is 40 hrs a week. I do have a limited number of teaching experience, however, at my other job, we were paid by classes or credit hours (Full time faculty had to teach so many classes and hold so many office hours and part time faculty were paid by actual credit hours taught)

So my question is, do any of you actually have to be in "the office" 40 hours a week or is it "you teach this many classes, hold office hours"

In my experience with university teaching positions, it has been "show up for your classes & office hours, and we won't ask questions."

When I taught in a community college, we were required to physically be on campus (or otherwise working for the college -- teaching clinical, etc.) 40 hours a week. My terrific program director was apologetic about this school-wide policy, but explained that the college had been badly burned by a number of people in the past who were supposedly "full-time" faculty but were never around, and turned out to be running full-time businesses of their own while drawing a paycheck from the college.

We are by the credit hour + 10 hrs a week in the office. We are also expected to be on campus a total of 30 hrs per week. Clinical hrs do not count the same as classroom hrs. They are multiplied by 0.6.

Nursing faculty are paid by the contact hour at our community college. Classroom teaching is 1 credit for 1 hour, lab instruction is 2 hours for 1 credit, and clinical teaching is 3 hours for 1 credit. We are assigned 20 contact hours per week that only includes direct time with students. Prep time, office hours (5 per week) and committee work is not included, but expected.

This is my first time posting in the section. I am part-time nursing faculty at a community college as clinical instructor and classroom lecturing (Nurse aide program). My question is: Is pay per hour better than pay per credit hour and/or contact hour? This is my first job within academia. My next question is what is the mininum pay per hour I should accept? Educational credentials includes a BSN. What are you guys making if you do not mine posting, just want to get a general idea of salaries/pay scale at community colleges? Will await responses....

"By the hour" is a confusing term in academia. If I take my annual salary and divide by a 40 hour week I make about $26.50 per hour. However, I rarely work only 40 hours if I count all the teaching, prep, committee work, community service and research that I do in a week.

Thanks for you response. Are you on contract of full-time? I am on contractural agreement for each class I teach being part-time. So I sign a contactural agreement for every class I teach.

I teach for a local University in their RN - BSN program. I am paid per hour of instruction, (a 4 hour a week class pays me 4 hours that week) that being said I end up putting at least twice that amount of work into the class in prep/marking etc. The U pays $108/hr which is great. ( This rate is only for part-time instructors and includes pay in lieu of benefits. Full-time faculty are not paid at this rate) Even then they sometimes have trouble finding people to teach.

Ok, I'm working on my MSNed - I definitely want to teach part-time when I'm done, I do staff development now. Will it be worth it to teach? What is the going rate??? Is the $108 for real???? I could sure use the money to pay back these loans!!!!!!
