Educators, do you recommend allnurses.com to your students?

Nurse Educators,

We regularly hear from nursing students that their nursing instructors told them about allnurses.com (AN). Many students tell us that allnurses.com is part of their class assignment, that they are supposed to visit AN and interact with nurses etc...

So I would like to hear from all of you educators? Do you recommend allnurses.com? If so why, if not, why not? Do you include AN as part of your assignments?

Our Nursing Student Section has just exploded in growth and the feedback from the students is overwhelmingly positive. I for one, would have loved to have a resource like AN, when I was a studnet (Infact, I started AN when I was a nursing student)

We'd love to hear back from you!

Please take a second to answer our poll, and comment Thanks

Great place to find out what the "hot topics" are for nursing and get various opinions. I use this site for the same reasons I recommend to the students: to keep abreast of current issues & attitudes.

I do occasionally and with caution. I do it along with a discussion about judging the quality of information available on the internet. Some sections of allnurses and some thread can be very helpful, but some information is wrong and/or not very helpful. So, I always include a discussion of the judgment needed to evaluate the quality of what they read here whenever I mention the site.

Only to some students. The reality is, I have been a member since before I was teaching, and I write a lot of stuff on here about myself. Since I started teaching, I know that some of my students have posted on here. I have figured out who they are , but I'd feel very weird if I saw them posting something negative about me or my colleagues. I have recently kept my posts more vague in nature, just in case someone does spot me . i'd rather not censor what I have to say, so I keep my identity more vague.

On occasion, I've referred some students who have had issues that I could not help them with, trying to get into a program/switching careers after a nursing failure, specific specialties/grad schools or out of state/immigration issues.

I mentor a lot of midwifery students who come into our NicU, for six weeks or so. For the ones who shined, who are so into learning, then I will recommend this site. For the others, well, I dont.

I also want to maintain some distance and anonimity between my writings here and my "face-to-face" life. While I will ocassionally reveal my identiy here, I am cautious about doing so.

Today was my first day teaching, I'm teaching LPN school. I recommended it to my students, so we should have about 20 more people join lol.

Re: Educators, do you recommend allnurses.com to your students?

I always recommend this site to my students. I do not make it a requirement that they join but I include it on my course Syllabus as a valuable resource.

I have gotten great feedback from those who do use the site. Reading posts in the student nurses forum makes them realize that our school is and school policy is very much like all the other schools. It encourages them that their situation is not unique and that they can vent to people who really do understand what they are going through.

Another aspect they really appreciate is the fact that they can ask so many people for assistance for such a variety of topics.

I get a lot of ideas off of the student forums to help my students in clinical and class.

I recomend to some, but only with a caution. Take everything with a grain of salt, do you own homework and research, realize that people who post online are a subset of nursing and may not reflect the reality of the environment you are in and prob a few other things depending on the student.

I have been known to use some of the postings as an example of life in a nurses station.
