Lightbulb Diabetes Promotion Walk

Hi,

For my community service hours, I am working on a fun walk for diabetes (through my work---a human services agency that assists developmentally disabled clients), and was wondering about some ideas you all may have on making this walk a success. For example---I've found a lot of famous people with diabetes, diabetic recipes, there's a man who is walking around the country for diabetes (also a diabetic)...thought it would be fun to mention him to try to get people to walk. I'm also thinking about a diabetic bakesale...with treats typical of a regular bakesale...also selling dt. coke/dt. rite etc. Does anyone have any ideas...I've never done anything like this before ? Thanks!

Angie

A diabetic cookbook would be a favourite with good low GI foods! But SIMPLE tried and tested recipes. Too many cookbooks commercially available have you trying to find substitutes for Wallangara greens or ground Acacia seeds.

I know some of my most treasured recipe books are those that have been put together by Rotary or a school P&C because they are simple and easy recipes.

As a mom to a child with diabetes, THANK YOU!

We put together a team for the diabetes walk every September. You can solicit local companies to donate to the walk in return for listing their companies on the flyer. You can also ask for donations of items for a raffle, or for snacks and drinks. After races, I have frequently seen massages available - those quick little upper back or foot things. You can ask a massage school to send some students. Have some incentives for those raising the most money for the walk - catalog gift certificate, boom box, etc. One of my favorite races is the Indianapolis half marathon. What I love is all of the entertainment along the way - bands (garage, marching, etc), singers, cloggers, pom-pom squads, square dancers, etc. That makes it really fun. You also need race packets - little goodies like bandaid samples, antibacterial gel, coupons. And don't forget the T-shirt for participating. I think Runner's World has something for race directors on their website. Good luck!
