Has anyone ever had their teaching assignment / contract changed in a major way midway through the semester? I've been teaching a 3 hour course as overload for five years, and all of a sudden, it is now part of my regular assignment. No more overtime
Any advice is appreciated.

Does your school have an established policy on faculty load and how does your teaching load compare? What teaching load do others in your department have as their normal load?

Depending upon the state you are in, union conditions, etc. your employer may have violated contract or labor laws by making this change. It just depends upon how far you want to push it.

Some years ago, my contract was cancelled early in the semester, and I was given a new contract with another institution (both affiliated with the same program). No warning. I talked with a American Assoc University Professors rep, and he pointed out that our state is an "at will" state, and I had no recourse. I was very upset, made phonecalls all over the place, but in the end, got nowhere. My salary and workload didn't change, but the change in affiliation meant some changes in advancement, evaluation, etc.

It might make some sense to get a legal opinion, but in the end, I think you'll just have to accept the changes.

thanks for sharing your thoughts. For several years, I've taught my regular full time load. In the summer I've taught a full load plus a 3 credit overload course. Now I'm told that the extra 3 credit course will be part of my regular assignment. Needless to say, I'm not happy. I'll let you know how it all works out.
