Areas to live (or stay away from), possibly buying in Columbus

There are many houses in Columbus that have a very low asking price. I wonder if these houses are located in higher crime rated areas.

Any suggestions on the areas where one could raise a small family where real estate is affordable?

What price range would a lower house in "move-in" condition cost? I'm only looking for a small two-bedroom with little property. Thanks

Re: Areas to live (or stay away from), possibly buying in Columbus

The Columbus Dispatch had an article in today's paper discussing crime rates in the Columbus metropolitan area. Here's the link:
http://www.dispatch.com/live/content...V.html?sid=101 Generally speaking, the majority of the areas outside of I-270 have lower crime rates. There are a couple of areas within I-270 which are exceptions to that, but houses prices are very expensive in these areas.

Like most areas of the country, the real estate market in the Columbus area is rather depressed. Which is good and bad when you are looking to buy. Good because housing prices are down, bad because you don't know when they are going to stop going down. You may want to consider renting for that reason.

We've relocated several times. Even though we don't have children, I alway research the ratings of the local schools systems to determine where I chose to live. I find that a community that is willing to invest in its schools are generally communities which I want to live in. Taxes may be a bit more expensive, but it pays off in property value and city services.

Good luck with your search.

Thanks for the reply, great link....I guess if it looks too good to be true then there's probably a catch.
