Eunice M. Smith Scholarship

In 1995, the NC Foundation for Nursing, Inc. received a bequest from the estate of Kate Lerch in honor of her sister, Eunice M. Smith, to be used for scholarships and grants related to study in the field of nursing. The Foundation established a scholarship program to support registered nurses who pursue additional education on a part-time basis.

Scholarships are available to registered nurses who have chosen to further their professional career by pursuing education at the baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral level on a part-time basis.

Requirements: Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. Must be a resident of North Carolina for at least 12 months prior to application.
2. Must be admitted to a program in North Carolina offering a baccalaureate degree in nursing, a master’s degree in nursing or doctoral degree in nursing or related field.
3. Must be enrolled part-time, but at least 6 hours per semester.
4. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in work already completed in the program in which currently enrolled or in previous nursing program if no course work has been taken in the current program.
5. Note: Priority will be given to NCNA members.
Amount of Scholarship:

Mary Lewis Wyche Fellowships - Deadline July 1, 2006

Mary Lewis Wyche Fellowships

In 2003, the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation to create a First in Nursing license plate with $15 of each license plate sold going to the NC Foundation for Nursing to fund the Mary Lewis Wyche Fellowships. Mary Lewis Wyche was the founder of the North Carolina Nurses Association in 1902and was the nurse who spearheaded the creation of the first nursing practice act in the country which was passed on March 3, 1903.

Purpose: The Fellowships will be awarded to registered nurses seeking their masters or doctorate in education, practice or administration on a full-time basis. These Fellowships are for $5,000 annually. If a recipient finds that they must reduce the number of hours enrolled, they will only receive half of the monetary award.

Requirements: Fellowship applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. Must be a resident of North Carolina for at least 12 months prior to application.
2. Must be admitted to a program in North Carolina offering a master’s degree or doctoral degree in education, practice or administration.
3. Must be enrolled full-time (at least 9 hours per semester).
4. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in work already completed in the program in which currently enrolled or in masters program if no course work has been taken in the current program.

Loretta Ford Scholarship - Applications Available August 1, 2006

Loretta Ford Scholarship

The Loretta Ford Scholarship was established by the North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA) Council of Nurse Practitioners in celebration of the 25th anniversary of nurse practitioner existence in North Carolina and, in honor of the national nurse practitioner movement's co-founder, Loretta Ford. Applications for the 2007 LFS will be available beginning August 1, 2006.

PURPOSE
This scholarship is intended to encourage registered nurses to pursue graduate level education and to enter advanced nursing practice as a nurse practitioner. Priority will be given to a resident of North Carolina.

REQUIREMENTS
Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. Document acceptance at an approved nurse practitioner program in the state of North Carolina. The documentation should be signed by the faculty coordinator of the program. A letter of acceptance by the registrar is not acceptable.
2. Demonstrate financial need based on submission of information regarding resources.
3. State rationale for seeking nurse practitioner education and immediate future professional plans and describe the population with whom you plan to work.
4. Preference is given to a NCNA member.
Amount: $1000 per year

A scholarship/loan program available to students who wish to practice nursing full time in North Carolina. Must be a U.S. citizen and N.C. resident entering a diploma, ADN or BSN program in N.C. that prepares students for licensure as an RN. The loan must be repaid through service or in cash upon graduation.

Deadline: Unspecified
Qualifications: Applicant must be: full-time student. High school students not considered.
Amount: $3,000 per year (diploma/ADN); $3,000 to $5,000 per year (BSN)

Daughters of the American Revolution Nursing Scholarships

The NSDAR awards the following scholarships through the DAR Scholarship Committee. Scholarships are awarded without regard to race, religion, sex or national origin. All four-year, or more, scholarships must be for consecutive years and are renewable only upon review and approval of annual transcript by respective NSDAR Chairman. All applicants must be citizens of the United States and attend an accredited college or university in the United States. The ONLY exception is the American Indian Scholarship which is also available for vocational training. All applicants must be sponsored by a local DAR Chapter.

Nursing School Scholarships : one time awards of $500. It is only necessary to submit one application for consideration for any award in this group or for the Madeline Picket Halbert Cogswell Nursing Scholarship listed under Special Scholarships.

Caroline E. Holt Nursing Scholarship : awarded to students who are in financial need and are accepted and enrolled into an accredited school of nursing. Deadlines: Feb. 15 and Aug. 15

Mildred Nutting Nursing Scholarship : awarded to students who have been accepted or are currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing. Preference will be given to candidates from the greater Lowell, MA area. Deadlines : Feb. 15 and Aug. 15

Madeline Pickett (Halbert) Cogswell Nursing Scholarship: The Madeline Pickett (Halbert) Cogswell Nursing Scholarship is awarded to students who are accepted or enrolled in an accredited school of nursing. Applicants must be members, descendents of members or eligible for membership in NSDAR. DAR Member Number must be on the Application. This is a one time award of $500. Deadlines: February 15 and August 15.

All applicants must obtain a letter of sponsorship from their local DAR chapter. (The only exception is the American Indian Scholarship.) Please send a stamped self addressed business size envelope to obtain the name and address of your state scholarship chairman and an application for any of the following scholarships.

Nursing Student Loans

Apply for this loan at the student financial aid office of the school where you are or intend to be enrolled. The Nursing Student Loan program provides long-term, low-interest rate loans to full-time and half-time financially needy students pursuing a course of study leading to a diploma, associate, baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing.

Participating schools are responsible for selecting loan recipients and for determining the amount of assistance a student requires.

Eligible Applicants

You are eligible to apply for this loan at a school that participates in the Nursing Student Loan program if you are

NCANS (North Carolina Association of Nursing Students) Awards and Scholarship Handbook

All nursing students (NSNA members or not) are eligible to apply for each scholarship offered through NCANS with one exception. Associate members cannot apply for Nursing Student of the Year (NSOY) in which a board position is part of the scholarship. If you win an scholarship/award and are not a member the cost of membership for NSNA will be deducted from your award with remaining amount being awarded.
