I know i am a tad late but hopefully I can help others from going though the same hardships that had to endure by dealing with the NESLP scholarship. The best advice i can give anyone about this scholarship is to DO NOT TAKE IT! Go to the bank and take a second mortgage out on your home before taking this.
I took this scholarship at the advice of the dean of the allied health department for my school. I never asked for it, but was told it was basically free money and all i had to do was work in the state after i graduate. I was having financial difficulties at the time so i jumped at the chance to get some extra cash. Second semester I had some family health problems and as a result i failed Spring semester. Two days later I contacted NESLP about repayment because at that time I had the money to pay them back in full. I was told there was 2 forms to fill out and that as long as i was still enrolled in school and got those forms filled out I would not have to repay. I had the forms filled out by my schools fin aid advisor. It was two months before i heard anything from NESLP. I get the same forms in the mail again telling me that since i was dropped from the program i needed to gt them filled out. I took them to the dean of student services this time and had them filled out. Two weeks later I was denied my request to postpone repayment because of my enrollment status.
I was livid at that point so i called and was told that i had to be enrolled full time over the summer semester. When i asked the lady i talked to in the beginning she told me there was no requirement other than i needed to be enrolled. I was then told that if I enroll full time in the Fall i could avoid repayment. However, I am auditing a NUR class which doesn't count toward enrollment. That left me with no way avoid repayment. Now i am left having to make payments because i no longer have the extra cash and I possibly will not be able to afford next semester because i have to pay this debt that if someone had just told me the truth about from the beginning I could have avoided.
My entire dealings with the ppl who are in charge of NESLP have given me the impression that the organization is HIGHLY unorganized. I have since learned from some people who took this scholarship that setting up work repayment after graduation is just as difficult and confusing.
