I'm new to this thread and to allnurses.com. So hello to everyone in NC. I'm in MI, been a nurse for 5 yrs and currently work in the float pool at U of M hospital. We're considering moving to the Raleigh or Charlotte area and have read a lot of the posts regarding these areas and got some great info so thank you! I have a question about the weather as I read in one post the Raleigh is 'hurricaine alley' and that in February there are ice storms. I'm surprised about this because I went through the history on the old farmers almanac and did see some cold days but it didn't seem that bad. Of course being from Michigan we're use to bad weather but thats why we want to leave. Thanks for any info you have and I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

Hello again, I forgot to mention earlier --- I love the position I have at UM, my current job and am hoping to find something just like it in NC. Like I said in my last post I work the float pool. But I am called a temporary Central Staffing Resourse nurse. So basically I work when I want to. They say you are suppose to fulfill so many weekends per year but they don't enforce it. As far as holidays go I'm not required and they wouldn't let me if I tried due to the pay. CSR temps here get $33/hr w/ $1-2 shift diff's. I love the flexibility because it's perfect for having kids. I call and ask if they need help (which they always do) and then work that shift. I can put in a schedule if I want but don't have to. The down sides are no benefits and no guaranteed work. Fine with me. Anyone know if there are positions like this in the Raleigh or Charlotte area?
Thanks again,
glowrm

North Carolina has beautiful weather! It's still in the low to mid 80's here in September. We do get hot in the summer, but not unbearable. We do get cold in the winter, but again, not unbearable. We did have a major ice storm a few years back, but this is rare. We'll get a good, state-wide snow (2+ inches) every few years. Being from MI, you'll be surprised by how easily school is cancelled for bad weather! And as for hurricanes, if one does make it up to NC, Raleigh is in the middle of the state, so it may get some residual - rain, winds, a tree limb down. I love it in here in NC! People smile and hold doors open for others and chat while waiting in check-out lines. Good luck with your move if you decide to join us!

I live in Murphy also (Hanging Dog). I work in Blairsville though. Pursue the best option for your career. At least with a CNA you can work weekends and go to school. I was a CNA, then LPN, now RN. It probably would have been easier to get the RN first in the long run, but, I probably wouldn't have had some of the experiences I have had that I have lived and learned Good luck in your career. I honestly believe nursing is one of the most rewarding although stressful jobs there could be.

They do have 'float' or 'flex' pools here at the major hospitals. However, if you do apply, make sure of which pool it actually is. Some have pools that they call float, but it is a full/part-time position, no differential pay, etc. You're best bet would probably be agency, same or better pay with flexibility that you're used to. A few agencies in this area are nursefinders, intellistaff, and MSN. They all have websites with online apps. Best of luck!
