Question Silly , Silly Question.......

This is a silly question i was recently having a debate with a friend that is also pursuing nursing and we came across the question of :::

When do hospitals start hiring for may graduates and december graduates????

Do hospitals require you to have your license before they hire you?

Is there an advantage or disadvantage of graduating in december as opposed to may??/

Hello...well I am a new December grad and I can tell you that many of my classmates, including myself, went for interviews and were hired around october-november (to start in Jan/Feb). Yes, hospitals DO hire you without your license. You can start to work before you take the boards, on what is called a limited permit. As for me, I dont see any advantages/disadvantages to graduating in December rather than May.

Hey, it's not a silly question

And the answer is: it depends. Some hospitals, in some areas, will take new grads any old time they walk through the door, and like the previous poster said, you are not required to have a license in hand to get the job. You are required to PASS the NCLEX-RN to keep that job, however.

Some hospitals set up specific "new grad" programs and only hire them for those specific months of local graduations. Or, the "new grad" programs are only for those times, but you can be hired whenever and still get a great orientation, just not the "grad specific" one. That happened to me: I graduated in May, but chose not to apply anywhere until I had my license, in July. And I didn't want to start until September; by then the New Grad program was done, but it made no difference in reality: I still got the same orientation, I just didn't do it with several other new grads at the same time (which, frankly, worked out quite well for me).

As for a May graduation vs a December one, well, you'd have to know if your school offered options. There are no RN programs local to me that have December graduations, only May ones. Assuming we're talking RN of course; LPN programs graduate in both months. Then again, local hospitals here aren't hiring LPNs, so that makes the first part of this moot!

Best of luck to you!
