Need help finding good pay and good work environmnent in NYC

I am going to be graduating from an Atlanta BSN program in May. I want to move to NYC because I heard the pay is better there and I have a friend I can stay with already. However, I want a hospital where it is easy for new graduates to get in (I have 4.0 but always been bad at interviews), and have good support and an internship/fellowship type program.

So basically I am looking for hospitals (or clinics or home care, etc) that pay well, take in new graduates regularly, not too competitive but at the same place a good supportive place to work. Thanks! (Im trying to get these loans payed of in 1 year, thats my prioritity!!!!)

Re: Need help finding good pay and good work environmnent in NYC

If you want to be in critical care, NYP Columbia has internships in both adult and peds ICUs. I don't know about non-competitive, though. I think all the internship programs in NYC are fairly competitive, and I know the one at NYPC has multiple rounds of interviews.

Oh, and I should add that while the pay is very good at NYP (68K for a new grad), the cost of living in NY is absurd. I pay $1675/month for a fairly small studio in Brooklyn. So if your friend is letting you stay for free or cheap, awesome!

Moving to the NY forum since you're asking questions about a specific region of the country. Good luck to you.

Re: Need help finding good pay and good work environmnent in NYC

Keep in mind that while incomes are higher, living expenses are also higher. I made 68k+ working FT plus a few OT shifts a month at my last job in SC. You won't need a car or car ins, but you'll pay more for rent and groceries. You also have to pay NYC as well as NYS income tax, in addition to federal taxes. HOWEVER, you can't deny that NYC has some of the best hospitals in the nation, an awesome social scene, tons to do, and did I mention it's NYC!!!? Come and work up here with Elizabells and me......www.nyp.org

Re: Need help finding good pay and good work environmnent in NYC

Is this good enough for a guy who doesn't go out much, is willing to do OTs and holiday shifts, has cell phone and internet, and doesn't need a large space to live (just a one bedroom apt, perhaps).

  • SALARY OF $26.75 PER HOUR
  • ONE WEEK’S PAID VACATION AFTER HAVING WORKED 2080 HOURS (1 year)
  • OVERTIME & HOLIDAYS COMPENSATION OF 1.5 TIMES THE EMPLOYEE’S STANDARD HOURLY RATE
  • OPTION TO PARTICIAPTE IN THE COMPANY’S HEATLH INSURANCE PROGRAM
  • EMPLOYEE SHALL BE ENTITLED TO MEDICAL COVERAGE(DENTAL) UNDER THE MEDICAL PLAN
  • EMPLOYEE SHALL BE ENTITLED TO FREE TERM LIFE INSURANCE COVERAGE, PROVIDED EMPLOYEE IS INSURABLE AT REGULAR RATES
  • 401K PLAN (OPTIONAL)
  • ONE MONTH FREE HOUSING
  • FREE WORKER’S COMPENSATION

And please, if you don't mind, explain to me (in layman's terms) what what 401K plan is. Thanks a lot.

SALARY OF $26.75 PER HOUR

-NO! not for NYC. You can find MUCH better paying jobs here in the city. NYP's 68k a year comes out to about $33/hr. That's BASE pay. Add on for nights and experience.
ONE WEEK’S PAID VACATION AFTER HAVING WORKED 2080 HOURS (1 year)

-NO! ONE WEEK??? Most facilities offer at least 3-5 weeks paid vacation.

OVERTIME & HOLIDAYS COMPENSATION OF 1.5 TIMES THE EMPLOYEE’S STANDARD HOURLY RATE
-This is pretty standard

OPTION TO PARTICIAPTE IN THE COMPANY’S HEATLH INSURANCE PROGRAM
-At what cost to you?

EMPLOYEE SHALL BE ENTITLED TO MEDICAL COVERAGE(DENTAL) UNDER THE MEDICAL PLAN
EMPLOYEE SHALL BE ENTITLED TO FREE TERM LIFE INSURANCE COVERAGE, PROVIDED EMPLOYEE IS INSURABLE AT REGULAR RATES
- At what cost to you?

401K PLAN (OPTIONAL)
Usually this means you contribute a pretax portion of your paycheck to a fund, which accrues interest. Sometimes the employer contributes to this fund as well. Check and see.
ONE MONTH FREE HOUSING
Where?...get pictures.

FREE WORKER’S COMPENSATION
-Every employer has to offer this (I'm pretty sure)

Hope this helps, Stevern21

NONONONO!!!

That offer is crap. Pure, unadulterated garbage. For all the reasons Steve said.

Re: Need help finding good pay and good work environmnent in NYC

Just be careful... there are a few lawsuits going on involving the NY state nurses association (union) involving a group of Filipino nurses who came over to work in a hospital and were treated terribly, where 20 were living in the same apartment, they had to work crazy hours, and got paid nowhere near what they were offered. ...
