This may depend on the nursing home and their patient acuity. Assisted living deals with independant elderly who need assistance in taking their medications, someone to cook for them assist with laundry and cleaning but they do most of their other ADLs independantly. A skilled nursing facility may have ventilator dependant trach patients, TPN feedings, renal dopamine IVs and many may need IVP drugs so that will be very simular to a med-surg unit in a hospital. Long term acute care facilities or LTAC also have acute titrated IV meds, unstable ventilator patients, patients receiving blood products and are usually the same as a med surg unit and some are usually a higher acuity. LTC or long term care facilities/units have independant patients who receive their medications from staff nurses, they also usually need assistance in ADLS, some are there for short term rehab after a hospital stay, some are there long term after a health event that does not allow them to live unassisted anymore such as stroke.
