Hey there, I was wandering if anyone had any opinions or advice in regards to working as an RN for a hospital supported by 1199 versus NYSNA. I know that 1199 has great medical benefits with no co-pays. But I was wandering is NYSNA is just as good in regards to medical benefits or some nurses feel it is better than 1199?

I believe that 1199 in NY only supports staff up to LPN's, and NYSNA only supports RN's.

My mom has been an RN for many years (over 25) and she's been in 1199... I don't think she's in it anymore but she changed hospitals and works in a different borough now. Is this something new? I hadn't heard about it but I definitely know that up until a few years ago (like 3 or 4) she was in 1199.

Really? Sorry about that then...I've only run into NYSNA nurses in the city, and when I was in 1199 many years ago I never heard any mention of RN's.

1199 most certainly represents RNs ... there is information about the RN division of 1199 at http://www.1199seiu.org/members/occu...s/rn/index.cfm

There is also information at the link above on 1199 contracts, profiles on 1199 members who work as RNs, etc.

Even though 1199 seemed like an outright communist organization to me at a time (1990s), they sure did a lot more to represnt RNs than NYSNA in many of the institutions I've worked at. I don't know how they are now,though. I'm self-employed Thank G-d.

Sure it could sound like right wing bs, especially if you're to the left of Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin .But I gave my opinion, based on being a member of both, albeit at the different times. I also participated on the City-Wide negotiating commitee with 1199 back in 1994. And participated in the March on Washington,D.C. in 1995, where lots of good things were accomplished ( talk about Right Wing )So I'm talking from the personal experience. What have you accomplished? How is being self-employed a "Right Wing?" I thought you liberals like the diversity, or is it only when it's a preversity?

thanks for this. My wife and I are moving to NYC in about six months and she wants copies of any union contracts I can find for her. The SEIU 1199 posts theirs but NYSNA does not seem to. Do you know anywhere that their contracts are? Calls to their office have not gotten any response.

I can't speak for 1199 or NYSNA's contracts, but Lenox Hill has their own union and they reached a new contract agreement last fall. If you google for it you can find it on line. I did (but not recently). Hope this helps.
