Hi all,

I live in south jersey about 15 mins from hamilton train station. I have seen a job I like in NYC and am wondering what its like to do that commute? I could take the train from hamilton to Penn station and do 12 hour shifts do you think it is realistic?

What county is Hamilton in? I take NJT from Red Bank to NYP in 1 hr/10min. It's doable if you can catch up on your sleep on the train. When I worked days, it didn't get me to work on time for my 7a-7p weekend shifts due to decreased service on weekends. It works for me now that I'm on nights.

Hamilton is in Mercer County I think the train ride is an hour I think?

My husband commutes from Mount Laurel, on the Greyhound Bus Line every day. He used to take the train out of Hamilton station, but it was a long drive and was putting too much wear and tear on his vehicle. He goes five days a week. It works great for him, he has to cut his sleep short (leaves at 5:00, gets the 5:20 bus, gets in NYC around 7:00) to get to the bus, but then he sleeps the entire way there and the entire way back (leaves at 5:15, usually gets home at 7:15). His trip to the bus station is about 20 minutes. We live about 5 miles from Philadelphia.

Since you are closer to the train station, you will probably be there in about an hour and a half. I think it's very realistic. We have people down here who have been commuting via greyhound for twenty years.

After my husband adjusted to it he didn't have any problems, and at 12 hour shifts you will only be going in 3 to 4 times a week. The only important part is to make sure the salary and benefits are enough to cover the commuting! Don't just count how much a monthly train ticket costs, also consider how much gas will cost to get to and from the train and how much maintenance on your vehicle will be involved.

I think it's doable...I don't live as far down, I live in East Brunswick, exit 9 off the turnpike and take the Suburban Coach bus into work everyday. Sleeping on the bus, is comfortable so it's not too bad. Plus if you're working 12 hours shift, then you can work every other day or so, so it won't be too straining. I believe some places will also cover your cost of commute, giving you transit check, like my husband's company. Good luck. Best thing to do is to try riding the train in and see how you feel about it.
