What's going to keep you motivated????

I start CRNA school this August at ODU and I know it's going to be all that everyone says and more, but what is the one thing that will keep you motivated when the going gets tougher than tough. I have a pitcure of a nice big house that I want with the mega master bedroom and bath, the big body benz...and vacations in the carribean, and college fund for my kids, shopping, shopping, and shopping....you all get the pitcure right? Oh yeah, and autonomy and no more but wiping or denture cleaning! What's the one thing for you that will make it all worth it?

I just started school and it's been a very frustrating 2 weeks but when I get discouraged I call my friend who is a CRNA and she lifts my spirits by telling me at the end it was worth it.

I pray to St. Rene and Morpheus to guide us through these grueling years. And hopefully that saying is true, "What doesn't kill us, will make us stronger"

You are soooo right. We are getting the oppurtunity to go where so many are longing to go. It's going to be tough, but I'll tell you like my hubby says "keep your eye on the prize".

Thinking of a big house is nice, but a real motivator for some of us is the picture attached to failure: family in rags, 100K in debt, dealing with melana in ICU again, no college for the kids, etc.

Good thing you are not going into this field for the money!

Seriously, I have said this before, but take some time to think about why you really want to do this (dig deeper than the shopping and pimp-ride, okay?), write that list, and then keep it handy so you can read it when you are feeling like dirt.

Being a CRNA isnt going to get you on MTV Cribs. You might want to think about being a rap star.

50 things...

I am compliling a list of 50 things about the ER that drive me nuts. I will always be able to look back at the list for motivation.

Here's a sample:

1. Screaming drunks.
2. Homeless screaming drunks.
3. Homeless screaming drunks with maggots on their feet.
4. Heroin OD's that try to kill you when you save them with Narcan.
5. Doing EKG's. (I really hate them)
6. GOMER's from nursing homes.
7. 90 year old ladies who are in severe distress and full-code status.
8. 911 calls for dime in the nose of a five year old.
9. Melena.
10. Drug seekers.
11. Drowned kids.

You get the picture....I could go on all day.

What will keep me motivated?

Sure the road will be difficult and bumpy, but keeping myself focus on the final prize is what will keep me going: a well respected profession, autonomy, knowledge to make safe independent decisions in the well-being of my patients, becoming part of an elite professional group "nurse anesthetist", and lastly the financial reward that comes with all of this.

I graduated from ODU this past august (BSN) and the entire school of nursing is very dedicated to students (including graduate school). While you are in CRNA school, there will be others who will be having a tough time and pushing each other along will make the time go by faster and less tough. (knowing this info from friends in the nurse anesthesia program)
