Should I retake SCIENCES??

I took all my sciences (inorganic/organic/A&P) EIGHT years ago. The school said I dont need to retake them (3.5 science gpa). My question is "will I struggle more in anesthesia school if I dont have much of a memory of these courses?" Honestly I really dont want to retake courses, but, will it bite me in the a** if i dont take a refresher? If so, which course do you think is the most important? Thanks ahead of time for the input.

Hi Melrey11. I am not in school yet-just starting interviews, but I have spoken with many current students. I suppose it depends on the program(s) you have selected. Everyone has told me that there is a "refresher" course in A&P and as for chemistry I know some schools don't even require it as a prereq. They teach you what you need to know in school. I would say it is safe to go with the schools advice, but with so much to learn in school-every little bit you have down already will probably help. You can probably just buy a review book and freshen up on your own without having to officially take a course. Good Luck!!

If I had doubt about my memory of past classes, I would audit the class. Not even formally. Make an appointment with said professors and ask if you can sit in on key lectures. I would not blow a good gpa like 3.5. You can tell the truth, you are auditing as a refresher for your future endeavors.

The schools I applied to all said they will teach me what I need to know. It's been a long time for some of my science courses too (Some about 15 years). The advice I have received from several is: enjoy your freedom before school starts. Enjoy life for a while because it will be limited while in school. I am doing just that, spending as much time with the family as possible and having fun! I am taking Advanced Pharm now online but that will just lighten up the load in my first semester. I had read over some old textbooks but nothing too strenuous.

Usually, your program should teach you everything you ever wanted to know, plus a whole heck of a lot more. I personally wouldn't retake them, just enjoy your life until school starts.

Most colleges have at least a minimum amount of online courses now days so I think your best bet would be trying the university you plan on attending your CRNA program at for that matter other schools that have CRNA programs too would be good bets to start looking.

cue93,

I took most of my prerequisites for my BSN at Louisiana State University. They have a distance learning section that you can take undergraduate classes, maybe some upper level stuff also. It's not online, but through proctors in your area. The good part is, if you are really good at making yourself work, each class can be completed in just 5 weeks (total of 15 assignments, 3 assignments per week).

The work isn't that hard and the tests weren't too bad. As a bonus, it's pretty cheap. If memory serves, it was at least half the price of normal college courses.

Check it out through LSU's website under Distance Learning.

Hope this helps.

B

I agree that you should check with the school you are planning to attend. I am currently taking Advanced Pharm online. It is one of the required courses for all the MSN degrees including anesthesia. I could have taken this course at several local universities that offer online graduate classes. PM me if you want more info.

i wouldn't retake the courses...although we started very heavy w/ organic chem review - they will refresh you enough - you would be wasting time and money...
as far as the internet courses - check w/ your program...they usually have only a few that are allowed to be internet (stuff like health policy, research....)
