Question Scope of practice

I have a question about CRNAs' scope of practice. Do CRNAs write Rx for pain out side the surgical setting, like at clinics that specialize in managing chronic pain. I looked at the AANA's web site, but in this area it seemed a little vague. I have heard that this is one area that remains largely the province of the MDAs, but I have seen some of the CRNA schools write that they cover this area in their curriculum. I would appreciate hearing from anyone on this topic, but particularly from CRNAs who have practiced chronic pain management, if they are out there.

I've never heard of a CRNA doing pain management before.

I don't have a answer but I do have another question- can a CRNA bill for Critical Care services, (ie Intubation, Art/Swan placement) does it vary state by state?? just wondering What do you all say??

We bill for anything done in the ER, ICU or on the floor. At least that's how we do it in Texas.

Yep. We bill for everything we do, the same way MDA's do. There are also CRNA's doing pain management kinds of things. I worked with one while in school. Here in Kansas, CRNA's don't have prescriptive authority, but we can always get the physician who referred the patient to us to write appropriate scripts.
